Though capital of Odisha, Bhubaneshwar is a small, charming mini metro with a population of just over eight lakhs. Here on work, I asked a colleague of mine to take me to an authentic Odiya restaurant (and not a touristy one like Dalma). Now Odiya food has always been one of my favourite ones because this state knows how to make its fish and veggies super delicious. He chose a restaurant reassuringly called âOdisha Hotelâ which only the locals frequented.I ordered the veg thali, ilish curry, mutton kassa and a wild card dish called manja rai (or so the bill called it). Veg thali was nice â competent dalma (though I have had better), lovely plate of bhajas, rice covered with a tasty chilla type thing and other paraphernalia. The world-ki-best ilish (really poetry on the palate) got me singing âmain shayar to naheenâ¦.â Manja rai turned out to be a banana stem dish which was somewhat pointless. As my Odiya colleague Debashis said âthis is not goodâ.Overall an enjoyable meal nevertheless!
