Its population is about a quarter million. Yoshkar-Ola means red city in Mari and was formerly known as Tsaryovokokshaysk (Царёвококшайск) before 1919, as Krasnokokshaysk (Краснококшайск) between 1919 and 1927 (both after the Malaya Kokshaga River, which runs through the city) and Charla (Чарла) (old Mari). Yoshkar-Ola was established as a military fortress in 1584, following the Russian conquest of the Mari region.

The noisy tv broadcast on the street made me think the place was packed, but it was surprisingly quiet. Nice wooden interior, pleasant staff. Decent length of menu, salads, soups and meat dishes to go with beer. The house beer was nice, the sausages were huge and tasty. The price of food is excellent, even including the extra 15% they added the Saturday night I was there. Nothing unusual, but a good eat in a central location.

This is a great place with the atmospheric interior of an old good pub. There you can find a great choice of meals, beer and desserts. There you can meet with your friends to spend a great time together watching live sport events or listening to a live band. This place has a small beer shop with uncooked food beside of the restaurant. I should suggest to try a delicious borshch.

Yesterday my family and I visited Tyoplaya Rechka for dinner and we were so so so impressed! Interesting local Mari cuisine, traditional Russian and European dishes, very welcoming staff that's ready to go above and beyond! They didn't have the wine my mom wanted, but the waiter brought another bottle and kindly explained why this choice would be good too. Since one of our guests didn't speak Russian, the waiter was amazing by communicating with him, making sure he had everything from ice in his drink to proper cutlery. Very few restaurants in yoshkar-ola have English speaking waiters and that's definitely made our dining experience unforgettable! I recommend this location to everyone visiting Yoshkar-Ola: its a wonderful place to get to know Mari and Russian cuisine as well as enjoy wonderful service, quiet and cozy atmosphere for reasonable prices. 5+!
