The Craic, Irish Pub, located in one of the Whakatane's most iconic structures, the Whakatane Hotel. The Craic is home to Irish based hospitality, friendliness and culture. We are proud to serve an extensive menu that will have something to satisfy anyone
Staying for a few days here in Whakatane, we gravitated to this pub in the early evening whilst out looking for somewhere to have dinner. The outside pavement is a natural meeting place with several tables under the shady trees. With the temperature hovering around 28c it was an invitation to sit and enjoy a drink. Santonius Crook, the manager, keeps some outstandingly good Guiness and that was my choice, my wife's tipple large Sauvignon Blanc. His dad followed Argentina when they were on their winning run to the World Cup, and one of the players caught his eye, hence his newly born son was christened with a Saint's name. There were several people, mainly blokes, occupying the tables outside, and they were being reinforced by a number of women of a certain age. Shortly afterwards we understood why, as a two-man band struck up the music, playing almost 90 minutes of foot stomping, madly loud songs and instrumentals, all accompanied by their adoring female fans! We decided once the music stopped, to quietly quit the area, and find somewhere to eat. Great start to a fine evening, and great beer.

Probably a great place when it's more busy - we were out early(ish) on a Sunday night. The food menu didn't appeal - but looked good for pub style food.Should have come in an tried our pork belly dish or surf n turf scotch meal best in town
The only positive thing I can say was that the coffee was OK. Apart from that the place was a huge disappointment. Looks like no-one else has bothered to review the place and I'm not surprised. The place is shabby and dirty, with lots of unwiped tables and dirty dishes around, even though it wasn't busy. But the worst thing had to be the staff. They were talking among themselves really loudly when we walked in and continued their conversation while we stood at the counter reading the menu and looking at the counter food. Not until we'd taken our selection from the cabinets and stood at the till did anyone speak to us. We ordered hot drinks and they took so long to arrive because the staff had to continue their conversation. To accompany my drink I had a slice which had stale crumbs from various other sliced stuck to the underneath. It must have been in and out of containers and different trays during the days since it was made. As I said before, thank goodness for a reasonable coffee.
