Having previously enjoyed visits here we called in on way home. Was quiet so that should have resulted in relaxed visit but alas, this was not to be! No problem finding a table. Ordered drinks at the bar which took absolutely ages - one serving whilst another went walkabout- not a good start. Decided and ordered food which has previously been delicious but what has happened? Food was overlooked and presentation abysmal. It seemed to have been thrown on the plates. Cutlery not clean - at least not to my standards - very poor! Think we will give this place a miss for a while as there are plenty other establishments in the area. What should have been a pleasant eating experience turned out to be an unpleasant ordeal. Such a shame!Hi Bumpkiness, I'm sorry about your experience with us we can do much better than this. I'd really like to speak with you to discuss what happened, if you have a spare moment please could you get in touch 01207 233217

I met friends here for Sunday Lunch this last weekend. We received a warm welcome on arrival and enjoyed a camaraderie with staff, like we were friends visiting. Despite the pub being busy, we remained unhurried, and nothing was too much trouble. The menu is varied and, of course, there is the traditional roast, served with just about every accompaniment you can think of. I had roast pork and the crackling is to die for - I wish I could get my crackling that crunchy! The desserts are to die for too! Thank you Darren and staff - we will be back...

A spacious country pub in beautiful surroundings over looking the famous Tanfield steam railway.50 Cover restaurant with large open real fires.Dog friendly dinning room also next to public bar with open log burner.Wide selection of main meals and deserts
We purchased Groupon Voucher for two steak meals. Turned up and had to wait over an hour for our food. We asked for steak to be cooked "Medium" it was was almost raw with blood (or some other liquid oozing from it). The vegetables were indifferent and seemed to have just been "warmed up". The onion rings were however ok!!!!Overall the place was dreary and dismal and our table was so sticky my newspaper stuck to it. Staff were disorganised with nobody seeming to be in charge. When we paid for our drinks we were asked if everything was ok. We gave a sharp answer "NO". The response was an apology but nothing else no qustion as to why we were unhappy. We left disgusted and will never go there again. We are sorry to read you didnât enjoy your visit with us. You mentioned you had an hour wait for food although you were both shown to your table as soon as you arrived, given menus and served drinks and you requested time for a few drinks before you ordered your meal. As you were aware by the time you were ready to order the restaurant was fully occupied and we done our best to get you your meal as quick as possible along with the other quests. Table checks are always done to ensure if there is a problem we can rectify it as soon as possible so I canât understand why your steaks werenât returned if they werenât cooked to your full satisfaction. We strive to give good service but we couldnât do anything else other than apologise for your wait. We are sorry you wonât be returning.

Written on behalf of my parents.Table for 5 on 28/12/18 for lunch. Service appalling & very slow, waitresses dressed shabbily & looked like they didnât want to be there. When food arrived (after almost 45 minutes) no apologies offered. No one bothered to ask if the meals were ok, table not cleared after theyâd eaten, even though staff were aware & wiping down table next to them.Ordered dessert, but after already waiting for some time told that the chef had âsplit the sauceâ & had to restart. Dessert arrived after another 45 minutes, no apology from staff or even a free drink to compensate for the long wait. Will never come back here again. What a terrible let down

We were a booking of 10 and everyoneâs meal was perfect. Although Iâve been here several times some of my friends had not and one or two of them are VERY particular about food. They had no complaints so that has to be good. Several of us also had desserts which were great.Itâs nice to be able to get consistently good food in an establishment and Iâve never been disappointed at The Ox. The menu is extensive and caters for all tastes. The staff are attentive and the prices good.

The Stables Bar & Restaurant is situated at the back of the Hall in the converted 18th century stable block. The restaurant features a large external courtyard and the building itself has been lovingly restored and retains the buildingâs original features
I have eaten here many times for business lunches and all the food I have ate here has always been excellent. Last meal I had here was a chicken dish in peppercorn sauce and it was very good, tasty and good value.Only negative, and I have knocked 3 points off, is the mobile phone and internet are extremely poor to the point of being useless. For a business oriented venue this is inexcusable and the owners should do something about this.Thank you for your review, John.We are delighted to read that you have enjoyed many recent visits to the Stables. It's great to hear that you enjoyed your most recent meal, our Tender Chicken Breast really is a great dish! I'm sorry to hear that you experienced issues with our wi-fi connectivity and I'd like to apologise for any inconvience this may have caused.Whilst there is nothing we can do about mobile coverage, I must note that we are very much aware of Wi-Fi issues. I can assure you that we are working hard on improving our Wi-Fi coverage and performance across our whole site. Hopefully, everything will be restored ASAP and we look forward to welcoming you back to the Stables Kindest,AlistairThe Stables Bar & Restaurant Team

Popped in here for lunch, we had nachos to share as a starter followed by the mixed grill for me and sweet chilli chicken for my better half. The portions were huge especially the mixed grill, with this in mind you may think the quality was low but no tasted great too. The mixed grill was under a tenner, you just can't go wrong for that.

Stayed here for a friends wedding recently but this review is about the accommodation and not the wedding which incidentally was superb. We booked a courtyard room which was spacious, warm, comfortable with lots of hanging space and a reasonable bsthroom. Being slightly detached from the main building you do not get disturbed by any noise from functions etc. My only disappointment was the breakfast. There is a good choice of cooked breakfasts and I chose the full English. This was advertised as being cooked to order but tasted like some of it had been kept warm under lights with rubbery scrambled egg, cold mushrooms and over cooked black pudding. Service also poor with little time given to peruse the menu and my plate whisked away almost as I put down my knife and fork.I would recommend the hotel which has a wide selection of rooms but would choose differently for breajfast.

Visited this pub while staying in the area. Received a warm friendly welcome and given a choice of where to sit. Service and friendliness was excellent. For starter I had the black pudding to which my only complaint was the large size of the portion. (lol, I guess you don't have to eat it all). We choose the deal of 2 steaks and a bottle of wine for £30 and was not disappointed for the price paid, The wine was very acceptable. We were asked our opinion on its quality as it was newish to the pub. My only gripe is that I like a hot plate to keep the food hot. These were warm. Overall a good choice for a meal. How do Keith.....Well well wellYeah ... I source all the wine myself , always looking for somthing special... Your SUPURB description of our food has made me so so......Hungry..... ha ha haNext time in Keith.... we will make your plate as hot as you like my friend...plus anything else we can do to make your visit.....PERFECT...After reading your comments..... if I hadn't tried the Blue Bell...... then I would certainly be making my way there ......
