It lies in the south east of Cornwall, facing Plymouth over the River Tamar. It was in the Caradon district until March 2009 and is known as "the Gateway to Cornwall". Saltash means ash tree by the salt mill. Saltash is best known for the I.K Brunel Railway Overpass Bridge, a towering 134-foot bridge, constructed in 1854, which frequently transports trains over the River Tamar.

My wife and I popped into the Royal Albert Bridge Inn for some drinks. As we live local, and had not been down to Saltash Passage for a while. Plus it was a fine sunny day, and you can't beat the Tamar for fantastic views, and a bit of chilling out time. It's on our doorstep anyway. We've had meals in the RABI before, and never had any problems. This visit was no exception. The service was perfect, as far as I was concerned. The landlady was polite and informative when asked about the changes, which were obvious. Plus they have only been completed 6 months ago. We also learnt a lot about the RABI before our time. So Saltash Passage has a wealth of history to it. Past and present, If one is inclined to ask. The changes to the RABI have been significant, and expensive, and have done wonders for the old place. Though it still maintains its originality, as the new owners wanted to achieve. As a dividing wall has been removed that was near the entrance, so as to present the now open planned view of a larger, and more accommodating, customer area. There is an open hearth fire which is out of bounds to all but staff, for obvious reasons. TOT TIP...## Those customers with children, should make themselves aware that during winter visits, the fire hearth will be active. So the onus will be on the parents to prevent their children wondering into harms way with regards to the hearth fire itself. ## There have been a lot of changes done with the Royal Albert Inn, so, in reality, some glitches should have been expected to occur. The views of the Tamar are outstanding, especially on nice sunny days as shown in my attached photographs. You can't beat it. I say that NOT because I'm a local, but it's a simple fact. Plymouth has everything on its door step. The Royal Albert Inn is an ideal location for what ever your reason, and the local natives are really very friendly. The new owners are also very nice, down to earth people. You'll like them. Why not give it a try, and see for yourselves. You wont be disappointed. They have worked hard, and invested hugely in their ownership, and have done that task really well in my eyes. Though as the saying goes...."you can please most of the people most of the time, but you can't please all the people all of the time." Thus Landlords have a thin line to impress, don't they folks?? Having read some of the negative comments, various people have left about the Royal Albert Inn, I feel that it is seriously ungracious of those that did I'm afraid. I really only have this to say about some. The reserving of a table for a meal via a telephone call for example. The logical thing to do is simply ask what to do upon arrival! I always ask what to do upon arrival, especially if it's somewhere new. By that I mean, do I report to reception, the bar or stand in a specific place by the entrance? I know who I am and why I'm standing there, the staff do not!!. All of these I have come across from time to time. It is such a simple thing to do, and costs nothing, except a little fore thought! So it's unfair to blame staff for ones own short comings. Then there was the problem of the Royal Albert Bridge Inn running out of beer!! Sacrilege!!! The world has stopped turning, and the end is nigh!!! It's NOT rocket science...but Inns and pubs DO sometimes have problems with beers running out for what ever reason!! THAT is not fair to criticise. Besides, that comment, could just as easily have been solved by ordering a whiskey....and drown the sorrows that way! Simples. SAVED! The end is not nigh! In all fairness folks. You can't really tell what a place is actually like, until you get there yourself. Negative comments are an easy cop out for minor experiences, but hardly worth a detrimental comment. A quiet and private word to the Landlord of your dissatisfaction...YES. Compromises are always forthcoming in some form of acceptance. in the possible guise of a reduced bill perhaps! Inn and pub Landlords will more often than not, wish to be seen to be fair...given the opportunity. Worth a thought maybe?

Very friendly welcome and service, nice decor and very dog friendly. We both had the haddock, perfectly cooked, flaky and very fresh, thin crispy batter, proper mushy peas and great chips. generous portions and well priced.

Perfect Sunday roast for me, we chose the lamb and my grandson chose the kids chicken, which were gorgeously cooked. Crispy fluffy roast potatoes, delicious cauliflower cheese, huge Yorkshire pudding and a lovely amount of carrots, cabbage & peas... Iâm sure Iâm missing something else too! Adding to that, the service was as friendly and efficient as always. We loved it so thank you.

Went here recently for lunch with my dadâs walking group and the food was lovely, preordered so quick and efficient I had ham sandwiches on a huge plate with salad for £3.50! Bargain! The rest of the food ordered in the group looked lovely as well This is a real community pub, with lots of regulars coming in and the bar staff know all their names Beer garden outside with a play area for the kids Great place!!

Enjoyed a large very yummy Sunday roast. Gemma looked after us & Nothing was too much trouble for her.We Sat outside enjoying the great weather & beautiful location. Dogs welcome. Only slight disappointment was the lack of vegetarian options on the menu. My veggie friend enjoyed Breaded Brie & chilli jam which was a "Nibbles/starter"Just an observation that I didn't see any signs for this beautiful pub on the way. I'm sure you are keeping it a secret! We Will definitely be back.

My husband and I were traveling around south west England and lucked upon this wonderful B&B.The setting was very picturesque with our room facing onto the courtyard. It was quite spacious and the bathroom had been nicely renovated.Went to the bar for drinks before dinner and were looked after by David âBasilâ and Kelly- they made our first night at a traditional English B&B just like you imagine. Very hospitable. Dinner was top notch- I had the fish with a salmon risotto and my husband had the carbonara. Faultless and very reasonably priced. Breakfast options were good and again the food was good.Well worth the stay. Thanks for your hospitality David and Kelly.

Absolutely awful this place donât go here! Landlady and the man behind the bar are completely and utterly rude and not welcoming! Me and my friends went to the pub for a couple of drinks and they went mental at us for having a good time and talking! After coming in the next day to order a drink they then said we were banned for being âlaryâ when we didnât do anything wrong! The man then continued to shout and call us non repeatable words and constantly saying he doesnât like us! If you are looking for a pub the Crooked Inn is a far better pub with a ton more of atmosphere!

Service both at the bar and from kitchen was fast and friendly. All but one of our foursome had the Friday evening special beer battered fish with chips, mushy pees and homemade tartar sauce. Good portion of fish with a very light but tasty batter. Pub a good choice of beers etc including Devon Red cider on draught. will definitely return to try the pie night

The whitebait starters were excellent and a meal on their own. Local sausages with beautifully cooked mash, gravy and vegetables were a real treat and we didn't have room left to try the deserts. Complimented by well kept beer and wine. Would definitely visit again if anywhere near.Thank you so much for a lovely review. We look forward to seeing you very soon

Have stayed over night on a couple of occasions and really enjoyed the hospitality, food and friendly service. Fabulous rooms with comfortable beds and excellent shower, great pub food and one night there was a live band who were first class. Wish this was my local pub.
