This time, just my wife and I had lunch at the Cross Keys. If anything, our experience was even better than our last visit. Friendly staff, a thoroughly decent house red, a superb meal, hot, generous with immaculate presentation and delicious. An extremely pleasant pub with great atmosphere. Certainly my favourite place to put on the nosebag!

Enjoyed a wonderful family meal here - good selection on the menu with traditional favourites and some more sophisticated options. Well presented, good portions, home made - everything a decent pub meal should be. Really good beer and wine selection too. Child friendly and a pleasant courtyard garden. Am planning to return for their midweek 'Burger and a Pint' night..!Thankyou for your review, we are glad you enjoyed your visit and hope to see you again soon.

Traditional Pub Grub! Family run for over 23 years! .. NOT A GASTRO PUB...
Visited last night for drinks and a meal with my partner. Food was lovely, steak slightly undercooked. When I raised it, they couldn't do enough to rectify. Lovely village pub by the river. Would recommend!

The Old Crown is a country pub dating back to 1885, set in the heart of rural Essex. We serve a varied selection of dishes for lunch and dinner and have great beer on tap.
I hardly ever leave reviews but I canât recommend this place highly enough. Itâs always been good but last night we had one of the best meals out weâve had in a long time, including in London. The Mediterranean fish stew was sensational with the perfect balance of flavours. The moussaka was one of the best weâve had outside Greece and the tapas board (as a main) was all delicious but so generous my teenage son couldnât finish it! Last, but just as important, the service is excellent. The two waitresses are lovely - disarmingly friendly but also very professional. My only regret is not being able to leave a bigger tip as you canât add it on to your card bill. We also came here for New Yearâs Day lunch with friends - four quite rowdy teenagers and slightly hungover adults and it was the best way to start the year!

Having read the reviews were really looking forward to our evening meal. We arrived at 8.00pm and ordered quite quickly, two dishes from the daily specials. An hour and fifteen minutes later our food arrived, my breaded chicken fillet salad was such a disappointment, the chicken fillet resembled a cheap chicken burger cut into very thin strips arranged around a soup bowl with my salad in the middle. My husbandâs suet pudding was extremely dry with no offer of any gravy. The vegetables were a boring combo of peas and carrots. The owners did apologise for the delay and offered us a free drink. The excuse being a lot of orders were placed at once. May I make a suggestion if this is the case, when punters arrive to eat, let them know there is a minimum wait of however long, giving them the opportunity to decide whether to wait or go elsewhere. Will not be returning.Sorry for the tardy response, we were unable to log onto the account. Unfortunately on the night in question we had an agency chef in the kitchen and unfortunately things did not proceed smoothly as they would normally. We completely understand your frustration and feel very sad that it spoilt you evening. We would urge you to visit the pub again and we will treat you to food and service of the normal high standard apparent from the majority of our reviews. Kind regards.Caroline and Jan

A grade two listed heavily beamed traditional pub. Two inglenook fireplaces, which roar away in the cold winter months and a large mature garden and courtyard in summer months. We operate a no booking policy, unless you are a group over seven. We offer si
So not having visited for a while due to moving away, we decided to book a table after finding ourselves back in the local area for a family occasion. Booked online, noted beer festival in progress and may affect menu, so advised to check.Arrived ahead of booking time, checked menu not affected, assured it wasnât and being written at that very moment. Ordered drinks, sat at reserved table, all good. Note here that we booked table for 6pm as we wanted to eat early. Checked if menu was ready to be advised ânot yet.â No problem! Other couples arrived and sensed vibes that a menu was neither forthcoming or offered. People on other table ordered cheesy chips, order accepted and food arrived. Went to check at bar if menu ready yet; no apparently. When enquiring how long it may be, the curt answer was âno idea.â At no point was any information forthcoming regarding if there was a menu or not, only specials available or just cheesy chips available to those in the know. There are four pubs in a straight line within a mile of this pub. We voted with our feet and chose one of those. Customer service there second to none.Interestingly we received an email advising us our booking had been cancelled: we know, we left.

Beautiful family run and family friendly pub in the heart of Kelvedon Village. Fresh homemade food served daily and a wide variety of food and drink available for all occasions.
What a friendly welcome from our hosts. It was a Wednesday lunch time and some of the main meals were only £7.We had a range of food and produced empty plates at the end.The same happend with the desserts.I would describe the food as great pub grub all at a reasonable price. We were well looked after and and were offered to move to the lounge area after our meal. We will certainly be returning to the Angel.

Traditional characterful oak beamed tudor pub and restaurant set in the beautiful village of Gosfield.
Stumbled across this pub on the way back from a day out in the Essex countryside and was so glad that we did. The Sunday roast was excellent, very tasty and plentiful. There was a nice vibe and the three young waitresses that served us were all a credit to the establishment. All in all a very enjoyable experience and another visit is definitely on the cards next time we are visiting the area.
