The Railway is a pretty average pub, all looking rather out-dated and a bit shabby, really. First impression is 'seen better days'.The staff are very pleasant and do their best to be friendly and welcoming. We stayed overnight for a 2-day visit to Alton Towers. This was a lot cheaper than staying at the resort and only meant a 15 minute drive. The breakfast was OK, a bit greasy with few options offered. The Railway is ideally located for the Churnet Valley steam railway - being about 50 yards away. The room was comfortable enough and had a bath (though this took ages to fill as the taps are sink taps!!). A comfortable king size bed, but the real issue was the curtains - very flimsy with no lining, so the room was lit up all night by the pub floodlights and during the summer, the room would be very bright before 5am.Having been slightly underwhelmed by the breakfast, we decided to have our evening meals elsewhere.Avoid 'Rock Night'!

A period travel inn steeped in history has been brought up to date with quirkiness and peculiarity. The Devonshire has something for everyone and offers a warm welcome to cyclists, doggies, families and courting couples, with its wide range of cask ales,
I have always had nice food at The Devonshire and this visit was no different. They honestly do the best chips, old school chunky style that your nan used to make.. beautiful! We had the Roman burger and ham egg and chips, recommend both. The service was great, my friend is heavily pregnant and fussy with her food but they were so accommodating.

The Hanging Gate in Shottle Gate is a country pub & restaurant oozing rural charm and rustic character. Our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales
We decided to go out for Sunday lunch and had heard good reports about the revamped Hanging Gate. Inside was too stuffy as it was one of those very infrequent summer days. Outside was beautiful but so disappointed that smoking was allowed on the decking. So as we ate our beautiful food we had the dreadful smell of smoke drifting over. The place needs to decide what its policy is. But currently a non-smoker because of health issues can't book again if smoking is allowed. My son who is a Sunday lunch connoisseur gave it 8 out of ten and the best in Derby area.Lovely friendly service and a pleasant experience. We'll be back but ìf smoking is allowed on the decking then we'll have to think twice!Roast potatoes, meat and gravy were great. Vegetables were just right. Great place to go. Give it a try!Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us your review DrRob2019. We're delighted to read how much you enjoyed the food and sevice and we will take on board your feedback regarding our smoking policy. Thanks again and we look forward to seeing you soon :)

Enjoyed a drink here on arrival in the area then returned on a Saturday afternoon to watch the World Cup England game! Had meal of lasagne which was lovely. Vanessa who runs the pub is very friendly and welcoming as are the locals who were also there to view the football. An enjoyable afternoon.

We came here for a meal on a week night.i had fillet steak and a spinach saag to share for starters. I had mine medium, it was Cooked to absolute perfection and the peppercorn sauce was stunning, think tasty and creamy. It came with none greasy onion rings ( a rare find ) Hand cut chips and all was absolutely awesome. My partner had steak medallions rare on sourdough bread with liver pate, she said it was amazing and really well cooked. The service by a Lithuanian gentleman was second to none he looked after us throughout making us feel special and being attentive, kind and thoughtful even refilling our glasses as we ordered Prosecco. We had a perfect night for a special occasion so thankyou to the restaurant, keep up the fab work. Give the chef who cooked my steak a raise.. Iv been to many a posh restaurant but this beats them all hands down.

We visited the Bluebell Inn for a family lunch and all thoroughly enjoyed it!Great choice of food available, all cooked from fresh and really tasty.Huge portions too... I had the Steak Pie which came with all the trimming... absolutely stuffed after eating it... no room for pudding.Staff were all very good indeed with the owner regularly coming over to see if everything was ok... which it was.Certainly recommend this place... worth booking though as when we went it was very busy.

We arrived spontaneously on a Thursday after drinks at monk bar. They didnât have any tables but accommodated us perfectly. Food was fantastic, the landlady is lovely and friendly and really helpful. We had lots of different plates of tapas. Couldnât fault the place to be honest. A nice atmosphere we were in a side room so itâs wasnât too noisy. Chorizo style dip with flatbread was particularly yummy. All the food and drinks were faultless. We will be back.

A warm welcome awaits you at our family run pub, a hub for real ale drinkers and walkers alike. A traditional 17th century village inn, where highwayman Dick Turpin is reported to have frequented on his travels. An increasingly rare breed of unspoilt inn,
A nice olde worlde pub with lots of little rooms and good outside seating. Great selection of ales and ciders and friendly staff. Only downside is that only cold snacks are available in the evenings. Thanks for the review! Yes unfortunately there is no hot food available in the evenings however if you ever get a lunch time spare I definitely recommend trying the lunch menu!
