Restaurante Amilcar

Came here for lunch and were hesitant because there was no other customers but were pleasantly surprised. The waitress was very pleasant and recommended two different fresh fish dishes, one in their special sauce and one just broiled. They were both delicious. The special sauce had carmelized onions, garlic and pepper and was suggested for the tuna. It was spot on. But like many azorean meals, had a side of boiled potatoes, shredded lettuce & carrots and a slice of tomato. The restaurant overlooks the ocean, which was beautiful but the seating was only ok.

The Tasca Caldeira is the typical Azorean tavern where you can enjoy drinks and traditional dishes. We have typical island dishes such as clams ( fajã the Caldeira de Santo Cristo ) , grilled limpets, and the roasted octopus. Come have fun in the summer e

Such a nice place to go grab a few traditional drinks/snacks, very friendly staff. I loved hearing the stories they tell about the island.

We have had lunch there already three times. We tried the “lirio“ and it was delicious. One portion and a salad was enough for us to split. Finished it off with coffee flavored pudding and a coffee from the local Fajã dos Vimes. Staff speaks English. Free WiFi.

On our 4 week trip to Portugal and the Azores we ate in a total of 19 different places. This enabled us to make good comparison between them in terms of food, service, atmosphere and value. After reading about the other possibilities in Velas and casing some of them out, including looking at their menus, we decided to eat in the place we had coffee outside at lunchtime. What motivated us to eat there was that it was almost full at lunchtime with what looked like locals having the lunch special menu. On our first night we both had tuna steak and it was very good value for 7.50 Euros, especially given the portion size. The perfectly drinkable red wine was superb value at 3.60 Euros a litre! Our meal on the second night was even better. Once of us had a huge portion of chicken fillets for 6.50 Euros and the other two very good veal chops for 8.50 Euros a litre. Both were served with nice fried sliced potatoes and a nice side salad. On both nights we had two big plates of good food, bread and a litre of good red wine for 18.60 Euros for the two of us. We would definitely go back again as this place was probably the best value for money out of the 19 restaurants we ate in.

Call in late evening and you will join the locals of Velas. It’s a bar for the locals, a restaurant and an outside eating area. The menu is varied and reasonably priced and has something for everyone. You get a real sense of being part of the island. The service is efficient and friendly.

Rather than waiting in the airport call in for lunch at this lovely restaurant. It is Almagro st opposite. Great fresh fish menu, the octopus was delicious. Inside and outside seating in a pleasant courtyard. This was a Sunday and not too busy at all. I believe it is closed on a Tuesday, worth checking. Good prices and large portions.

Unimpressive restaurant from the outside, has a large and well lit area upstairs. Excellent food overall, grilled fish (enchereu) especially good. Copious amounts of food. The Frei Gigante white wine from Pico is an excellent dry that will go perfectly with the fish. Very good desserts with an excellent passion fruit mousse/pudding. The best choice in Velas, we kept returning.I noticed that this restaurant prepares lunch boxes for hikers - if in line with the rest of the food definitely to try!

Restaurante Booka stands out because of how helpful and friendly people are (not sure if they are owners or staff or both). Whether it's talking you through menu options or, in my case, firing up the kitchen a few minutes earlier than planned because I had a boat to catch that evening, the owners make Restaurante Booka a special place indeed. The enthusiasm the chef has for the food is infectious and the quality of food is indeed head and shoulders above other restaurants in Velas. Delicious! The dining room has panoramic windows and is beautiful. The only thing that might confuse guests is the entrance / the building from outside: the restaurant is above a Chinese discount shop and not heavily signposted from the road, so its entrance is not very prominent and you have to climb up the stairs to its door.Highly recommended!Muito Obrigada! Esperamos voltar a vê-la em breve.Thank you so much. We hope to see you again soon

This small cafe is located on the outskirts of Velas - opposite what appeared to be an ambulance/ fire station and a few minutes' walk from the Hotel Sao Jorge. We had a coffee and pastry (small selection of the latter). There are a small number of indoor and outdoor seating / tables. We had to abandon our seat outside due to being joined by two people smoking. Whilst this cafe is fine if you're passing, we wouldn't recommend going out of your way to find it.
