No smiling, does not make you feel welcome. Great view, but not much else to recommend it. Would not go again. Food average and edible, but menu completely in portugese.

When I asked the Portuguese manager of a travel agency here, which restaurant he can recommend, he told me that his favourite were the 'Camoes', named after the great Portuguese writer. It is in the center of the town and as all places I happened to go to in Sao Tomé also run by Portuguese. And as in so many places in Portugal a big TV screen wasn't missing, something I don't particularly like in a restaurant. There are daily specials, which change every week. Thus when I was there they offered 'Cachupa' (the national dish of the Cape Verde's) on Monday, and 'Calulu' (Sao Tomé e Principe's famous dish) on Thursday. It was also the only place, I encountered here, where wine is not just sold in big bottles, but also by the glass. Both the white and the red house wine from Portugal are absolutely drinkable.Out of the menu card with a cork cover (very Portugal again) I selected the 'Degustaçao Mar', which consisted of 'Salada de Buzios, Salada de Polvo, a Camarão frito, Paté de Santola and Pão torrado (thus a whelks salad, an octopus salad, a fried prawn, a crab paté and toasted bread). They also have a more meat based 'Degustaçao terra'. Since the menu wasn't too big, there was room for an espresso and a dessert, a 'Mousse de Maracuja.' Service here was the friendliest and fastest of all places I had been to in Sao Tomé during 10 days. When leaving the waitress came running after me and handed me all smiles a glass with 'Aguardiente from Sao Tomé', offered by the boss. If it hadn't been my last evening on the island, I would have gladly returned. For the food, for the atmosphere and for the service by the young local woman, who also happened to be a gazelle-type beauty.

This place is NOT a restuarant. They serve petiscos (like tapas). However, the drinks are downtown New York prices. The decor is interesting and thoughtful, the staff are iindifferent. So overall i visited once never to return.
This place has some good and interesting dishes. The chef has an artistic touch but it sadly paled into mediocrity some time ago. Poor attitude and a couldn´t give a hoot attitude towards clients (especially tourists). Well over priced for what is on offer. One time i ate dish of the day,it camt in a bowl and was 95% potatoes Lots of space that could accomodate tables, but business is not strong in this place.

As the name says', this is really a very centrally located place. Although in a rather non-descript modern building the interior with the high wooden ceiling, wiht the ventilators and the according decor very much exudes an air of old Portugal. There are poems on the wall by local writers and the place is obviously run by an European lady I saw around, most probably a Portuguese, as in all the places I had been to in Sao Tomé.We ordered at the counter and all was brought to the table by a very bored, unfriendly young black woman. The only negative point in here. The coffee was good and also the 'Pasteis de Nata', maybe the best we had in Sao Tomé, although not surprisingly far from one at Belem near Lisbon. As we saw some people were smoking in here, others had proper meals, which apparently are also available, although the place basically seems to be a 'Pasteleria'.

Excellent food, good service. Family operated eatery and they take good care of their customers. Street parking is available. Outside eating as well as inside. Salad is simple, but very well done.Thank you for your kindness and for having visited us several times during your stay in Sao Tome. We are delighted that you like our service and our food, especially the chicken moamba with funje. You have become a friend that we cherish.

View is nice over the bay but that's where the complimentary words end.Only fish they had in was the most expensive one (surprise, surprise), so I opted for that. For 250dobra I received some very, very bland boiled potatoes, boiled spinach and some fish. The fish was well cooked but was so overpowered with herbs and seasoning it really ruined the dish.Wouldn't go back.
