The prime rib sandwich-they are not messing around! I was expecting sliced prime rib, but it was literally a honkin slab of meat on bread. It was charcol grilled. Tasty and the price was right. This place is a typical midwest restaurant and the service was great. This is probably the only place you can get pizza in town though.

My friend and I stopped in Clarinda whilst driving though south-west Iowa on a road trip. We stopped for lunch at around 2pm and the only place open was J's. I had a burger which was fresh and tasty and reasonably priced. The lady serving was extremely friendly and helpful and chatted to us for some time, answering our many questions about the town and the area and providing advice about things to see and do locally. I thoroughly recommend J's and would happily eat there again if i'm ever in Clarinda.
Food was OK. We came on a Sunday, after the dinner rush, 4 table still piled with plates. Salad bar was empty, and the hot bar was lacking also. 4 employees working (1 was "management")...1 waitress running her butt off to seat people, wait on people, fill drinks, take orders, fill salad bar, answer phone, run cash register.....RIDICULOUS! Only saw the management come out once to seat people, another female staff was doing nothing but standing behind pop counter. Pizza maker was making pizza, filling it at the cash register. Never in the hour we were there was any tables cleaned off. Husband asked our waitress if it was always like that, she said YES Sundays are really busy. I would suggest avoiding on Sundays!
