Tagliata is an Italian dish consisting of slices of cooked beef in a balsamic sauce with lots of rocket and topped with shavings of cheese, usually Grana Padano. It is my favourite Italian 'secondo piatto' and I have eaten it all over Calabria where I live.Sounds simple enough but, believe me, there is a range of things that can go wrong, usually to do with the beef itself, where and when it originated, fresh or frozen, the amount of fat and gristle and how it was prepared and cooked.Until I ate at the Casa del Ferroviere, I thought I had already found the best Tagliata closer to home ... but not so. The Casa del Ferroviere is definitely top of my Tagliata ratings. I knew it was going to be good when the waiter asked me how I would like the beef cooked and I was not disappointed.The rest of the meal was excellent too ... I ate my Tagliata with some roasted potatoes and accompanied by a wonderful local red wine.I planned to stay in Castrovillari for only one night but decided to stay one more so that I could return to the Casa del Ferroviere for another Tagliata meal.The Casa del Ferroviere is a very unassuming place, not the sort of place that tourists and visitors always gravitate to because it seems to cater mainly for locals ... but then, if you find where the locals eat, that's where you usually find the best food and a great unpretentious atmosphere.

Simple low key and casual family restaurant. Friendly service. Wide assortment of pizzas. Basic pasta dishes and meat and fish. It appeared they also did take away. Nothing exceptional but good, easy place to eat and opens at 7 for dinner. Just a little bit on outskirts of town... Less than 5 min in car.

nice position, we had been let down by a famous restaurant which was unexpectedly closed . we read about this, and open on a sunday . the service was quite rough, limited choice of wine (no white available ) , but the pasta bacco inferno was amazing

Very good restaurant, which has been delivering high standard service for quite a few years by now.This time we had, as a first dish, âgnocchi al pesto rossoâ, a kind of dumpling pasta savored with ândujaâ (a spicy red sauce typical of this region), basil, nuts, served on a bed of crusty cheese. It was excellent, the spicy sauce beautifully mixed with the other ingredients, so that the taste of the pasta itself could be clearly appreciated.As a second dish, it came a beef âtagliataâ (slices of medium-roasted beef meat), savored with a nduja-based sauce. It was good, the meat was of a good quality, although its level of excellence remained below the one of the first dish. The above was accompanied by a glass of local red; a wide selection of wines was available. The menu was not very long but included quite a number of dishes that had been specially designed and canât be found in other restaurants. The service staff was prompt and attentive all the time, as so often happens in this restaurant. Environment was quiet and elegant, making this place a great choice for invitations. Prices are not cheap, but I believe they are in line with the high standard of the place.

Just spent a lovely evening in the company of friends here at the porch where I come often .. We fell upon this little restaurant by accident tucked in the old town in a little back street square. the young staff were attentive and offered great service, the indoor restaurant was clean and very well presented and the outdoor furniture was brand new. the staff worked hard to please and the food was great - we had to tell them that the bill was too low! Follow the signs when in the old town and the staff will make sure you enjoy yourselves

Comfortable seating outside, good service, very good food â This restaurant is one more venue in this town that has been able to maintain a quite good standard over the last few years, and thatâs properly reflected in the customerâs high rate of return.This time we had âbaccalaââ, thatâs salted codfish, a very traditional Italian way of preparing cod. Spaghetti with baccalaâ were very good, the fish was tasty and tender and the sauce delicious. Also the pizza with baccalaâ (a version of pizza not easy to find) was really good.Definitely a restaurant to keep in mind also for friendsâ invitation.
