Small hidden gem in Rockdale.Very good authentic Mexican food, run by a Rockdale family, dollar tacos on Wednesday.
Okay, if you want a Taco Bell experience this is not for you. If you like experimenting with food and don't mind not knowing exactly what you are getting, but want the journey of exploration - this is your type of place. The chips are crunchy and delicious and so are the two sauces for grazing. There is a green and a red. I mix the two liberally and hre green can be a notch or two above regular hotness if you are weak on the scoville scale. They have a set menu where you can get your tacos and so forth. The meat is shredded and it is not cheddar cheese but the yummy Mexican cheese for a topping. The best stuff is written on the boards posted around the restaurant. Desebrada in salsa verde is a shredded pork in a green sauce which is very good. My husband loves the short ribs in a chile morita sauce. The pasilla sauce is also quite yummy on anything. If you want something more bland yet as comforting as a stew is any meat a la mexicana - i've had it with ground meat. It's a good start for someone unfamiliar with all the different chiles and coming along so you can indulge your tastes. The albondigas (meatballs) soup is filling and delicious as well. My hubby also gave the menudo (tripe) a try, but couldn't get quite past the texture. Many of these dishes come with fresh, homemade tortillas for wrapping. We've taken them home as leftovers, but it is never as yummy as freshly served. Just the right combo of stiffness and chewiness and the flavor balances the potent sauces well. Most of the specials come with a reddish, yet innocuous, mexican rice and refried beans. I'm not a fan of refried beans, but theirs tastes mild and goes with the sauces. You can request salad instead of the beans - it is served with a squeeze of lime. They usually don't served it that way since the sauces run into the salad and some people don't enjoy that mix.Definitely try the jaritos pina, a delightful pineapple pop. It also comes in a few other flavors. This stuff has real sugar in it so it tastes more satisfying than American pop. There's also a rice milk drink some of my friends are addicted to.The wait staff is friendly, but don't be surprised if they don't all speak fluent English. It seems they normally know to send us the waitress who can be somewhat helpful in our attempts to figure out the menu boards. Once again, that is part of the charm of the place. If you want Ritz Carlton preciseness then this won't meet your expectations, but if you want great Mexican grandma's home cooking in a friendly atmosphere....go give it a shot. Bring some adventuresome friends and order a bunch of dishes to pass. Who knows what is going to show up on those menu boards?

We had business in the area and asked the receptionist to refer a good restaurant close by. She didn't hesitate or have to think for a second and pointed us here. We were (I think) the only non- Hispanic customers but felt comfortable. The menu was in Spanish but had good pictures. We ordered the lunch special and drinks. We got the usual chip n salsa basket and immediately were served 3 really good steak tacos and sides, rice and beans. The table were set with spiced vegys and different sauces, red and green. The only out of the ordinary thing was, we never got a bill. There's an honor system where you tell the cashier which table you were at, and pay.
Family of five arrived at 8:00pm on June 22, 2017. The waitress was very nice and explained the meal well. It was truly authentic and very tasty. The service was fast and she stayed attentive. The only negative is they only accept cash. That's difficult at times in today's day and age but otherwise it was all perfect.

They seem to have a good drink selection and a smaller western themed menu. The food is good, not spectacular, and mine seemed to come a little overcooked. A homeless person was outside the front door when I came in.The ambience is nice so I'd give it another try but don't expect gourmet food. It's more of a bar type restaurant.

Great service, great food at an incredibly affordable price. Chips and salsa awesome-just ask for side of hot if you like spicy. Chipotle fish tacos are the best in the area. Al Pastor is also one of the best in the area. We get them served traditional style and ask for lime wedges. The complimentary soup alone is worth the visit. We never leave hungry and we always feel like we got our money's worth.

I cannot wait to return. The gentleman who took our order made great suggestions for us to try. The tacos were fresh, made to order, and the order came out quickly. Not to mention at excellent prices. Everything was over the top delicious. The Cuban Taco was by far my favourite. If you find yourself in Joliet, please stop by and try their food. Watch the days they are open and the closing times as well.

Iâve been here a few times for lunch with the girls, itâs always good! So I decided to bring the family here for some dinner. Their chips and salsa were very good and authentic. Our waitress was so friendly and spoke great English. We ordered a supreme chicken burrito, the tequila lime shrimp which was a healthy alternative lots of veggies! And grilled shrimp no carbs, I liked it! We tried the fish tacos which was flavorful, all dinners except for the shrimp one came with a generous portion of rice (yummy) and beans. I also tried a cucumber margarita....so different but I liked it!

Met with friends before a Christmas concert for lunch. I ordered the chicken, mushroom, spinach quesadilla. Came with rice and beans. Delicious. My daughter enjoyed her fajitas and said she'd definitely order them again. Even with beverages for everyone and guacamole appetizer, the bill was about 20% less than I expected. It's on our list of places to go back to! Nice decor and atmosphere and friendly service, too.
