This tiny restaurant is always busy or about to be. It is a favorite of locals and travellers alike. Authentic flavor, friendly family owned service, and cute homey decor set the mood for a fantastic dining experience every time you visit Northwest Indiana.

The Chips were great, the the salsa a little hot for mild mannered gringos, but great for us experienced fire eaters. The fajitas were more than plentiful & very tasty, the seafood enchiladas were very very good, the beef chimichanga was amazing- the picadilla beef had the perfect seasoning to make this a tasty meal.
This is a recently opened Mexican restaurant in the old Long John Silvers location on US 41 south of US 30. Sparkly clean inside and out. Decent size menu running the gamut from appetizers to dinners. something for every Mexican food taste. Sorry. no hot dogs or hamburgers. I had the tacos Al Pastor for lunch and 2 were plenty to fill the void in my stomach. They have 2 additional locations in Chicago Heights for those "across the border". Definitely worth the stop if you're in the neighborhood.

Second La Caretta in area, one also in Merrillville, IN
With no plan in mind, we happened to be in the neighborhood of La Carreta Restaurant and Bar in Schererville, Indiana and decided to celebrate the Cinco de Mayo holiday with an early dinner. Since it was after lunchtime and before the dinner hour, the restaurant was not that busy for a holiday. While perusing the menu, we ordered a couple of Margaritas to go along with the house provided Salsa and Nachos. The Margaritas were big, delicious, and potent. As for the Salsa and Nachos, they were clearly homemade. Better than we expected! This seems to be a place people go for drinks late at night, but our food and the service that we received was extremely good. We selected the La Carreta Sampler which was made up of a bountiful platter of a fried Beef Burrito, fried Chicken Burrito, and a Chicken Quesadilla. To complete this masterpiece, it also had a hefty number of toasted Nachos, Sour Cream, and loose Meat. Plenty to share with your amigos for $12.99. I followed that masterpiece with a Taco Loco. You pick three of your favorite Tacos. Choose one of each or mix and match, Carne Asada, Carnitas or Chorizo. Served with Lettuce, Tomato, shredded Cheese, Rice, and Beans for $9.99. The inside was nicely decorated with both booths, tables and chairs. So, this is a pretty nice place to go. Especially considering how crappy the strip mall it's in has become. Their location is along side of U.S. Highway 41 North with plenty of free off-street parking.
We are regulars at this restaurant. We keep coming back for the nachos rancho grande with chicken, featuring homemade chips, amazing pulled chicken, melted Mexican cheese, yummy veggies and guacamole. My husband also loves the chicken burrito. It has quick service and a great location near baseball fields and school for a perfect after-activity dinner.

I ordered three different tacos and a tostada, each with a different meat, fish, and shrimp . Each was excellent with it's own special flavor. It was 1/2 price Margarita night so why not?!? The frozen strawberry was a little disappointing but my friend's regular Margarita was fine. Overall, good food and service.
