VERY nice bar-type atmosphere. Good service. A/C. Healthy food .... love the creative veggie tacos. They also ensure that the beans and rice are vegetarian. Left feeling great!

El Gato Cantina, is a traditional Mexican restaurant offering authentic Mexican cuisine to Burlington and Essex Junction, Vermont. The philosophy at El Gato Cantina is to make delicious food with traditional Mexican family recipes. We now have two locatio
This is the second time we ate at El Gato. The change was slight but noticeable. The chicken tasted processed and that ruined the dish. The Tostada was excellent but the chicken soft taco was lacking. When I first had this dish, it was excellent.Would I go again? Probably. The Flynn theatre is up and around the corner, so if we are seeing a show and need a decent meal close by, we would probably return. However, if the chicken dish is a let down again (I only eat chicken and fish) I will likely never return after that. The atmosphere is cozy and the service is good. They are attentive. The music is authentic which adds to the atmosphere.

We dined as two couples on a beautiful summer night. Both indoor and outdoor seating were available. The chips were served with medium salsa and warm refried beans. They were delicious. We ordered drinks (Kendall Jackson Chardonnay and local brews). For dinner we all chose the fish house specialty called Pescado Borracho. It has red snapper, sautéed mushrooms, onions, perfect spices, all simmered in a white wine cream sauce. Oh, and fresh avocados sliced on top. There was a small salad with cream of cilantro or balsamic dressing. All four of us agreed that it was delicious. See the picture in this review. I would actually give it 4.5 stars, if I could. The only issue was that the service was a little bit slow on taking our drink orders and then taking our dinner orders. Once ordered, however, everything came in a timely fashion. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Excited to have pupusa again, we went to Esperanza for restaurant week and had their preset menu. Even though they were "everything" pupusa, however, they weren't particularly flavorful, or ingredient-full either. Solidly mediocre, which was disappointing. Moving on to the main course, we had decidedly mixed opinions. The mole was...okay. Again, not very flavorful, which is not how a mole should taste--it should be bold, and memorable. This was a a small drizzle of thin sauce over the top of decent chicken. The carne a la milanesa, however, was absolutely delicious. Very flavorful and savory marinade, the steak really popped. None of the sides stood out enough to mention specifically, which left us with one good main dish. Finally, they were out of their flan, leaving us with "fried" ice cream for desert. As others have noted, it really is just ice cream rolled in corn flakes. I'm pretty sure they don't even fry it--it doesn't come out hot and melting. Overall, a rather disappointing experience, especially for restaurant week.
