Find out what Mediterranean restaurants to try in Matera. Get to Matera quickly, because it’s still relatively undiscovered by foreign tourists. In town, visit the Domenico Ridola National Museum. Matera’s real claim to fame, though, and the reason it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the extensive series of cave dwellings ("i sassi") southeast of town, first inhabited by Benedictine and Basilian monks. You’ll see individual cells, chapels, and even some churches, many adorned with Byzantine decorations and frescoes.

We had salads (you select the ingredients), focaccia, and house wine for â¬15.50 - a steal. The marinated vegetables for the salad were flavorful, the house was a great mellow red, and the bread was soft with a tasty and lightly herb infused. It was a nice cool break eating inside on a warm day. Highly recommended.

AltraPizza, a few meters from the center of Matera, is a take away pizzeria with home delivery service and 30 seats. Our pizzas, soft, light and crunchy, are the result of a maturation of 96 hours and cooking in a wood oven. Wide range of doughs (moringa,
Did not live up to the reviews. Nice pizza. Quick and cheap but would not go out of your way for it.

We stopped in Dedalo for a late lunch. To our delight, it was a charming restaurant with incredible atmosphere. The menu was also a surprise, not very extensive, however, unique in their selections. As we were seated we were provided with a complimentary glass of Prosecco wine. Our orders were a great choice. Our first was a grilled vegetable parcel, followed by agnolotti stuffed with burrata, and rocket pesto and tomato fondue. Our second order was hyacinth pancakes, and pistachio crusted black pork in a light red wine sauce. Fabulous! We topped it off with a shared Espresso Tiramisu.....a great lunch. Then a stroll within the resturant into their caves with exemplary carvings.....an extra treat!

Deserves to be Michelin starred.Food and service both excellent. Catered for 3 vegans and 1 vegetarian without a problem. Some lovely touches that Iâve never seen before such as special plates and cutlery stands.A must visit restaurant when in Matera.

We had a wonderful evening dining at Dimora Ulmo. The tasting menu was a feast from start to finish, with beautiful looking plates, refined and surprising tastes, lovely textures, and well chosen wine pairings. Service was both attentive and friendly. Great value for a very fine dining experience. The only area for improvement that I would dare to suggest would have to do with the lighting of the dining room that could be dimmed somewhat for a cosier experience still. Warmly recommended!

Basquait has a magical way of turning peasant food into art. Using only a few local ingredients, the kitchen transforms traditional Puglia recipes into creative dishes with an artistic presentation. Located a couple blocks outside the Sassi area, Basquait offers delicious, home-style comfort food that is memorable.

LOST IN THE SAUCEShould not have a Michelin star. Way too many ingredients and all the food smothered in cream a butter, so you canât even decider the freshness of the actual food that youâre eating. Itâs a perfect example of a chef going overboard in adding too many ingredients to a dish. The flavors did not compliment each other as well. The only one flavor that stood out is cream, and butter. Itâs a shame to smother good local produce to the point you canât appreciate the essence and flavor of the most important part of the dish, the Fish, meat, pasta, vegetable-where is it? Lost in the sauce.

My gorgeous tour guide recommended this little place for lunch and am I ever glad I listened! Definitely some of the best food I've ever had, coupled with the fun experience of trying something completely different. The sandwich was so good I went back at dinner and got the same thing. I also took a piece of mattonella for my long drive back to Naples the next day. The beers here are really good too. I always try to drink local when it's available and these are delicious! The little gal behind the counter was adorable and so helpful a d sweet.

We were a large group and chose the selection of food. This gave a good selection of the regional Italian food and it just kept coming.... We eat very well, the experience was made even better by the consumption of some excellent regional wines.Very good food and service.

This restaurant was attached to a hotel and had a wonderful airy cave setting together with attentive efficient service. It was fairly empty and deserves more customer. The prices were higher than we have been paying but the menu was different from normal fare and beautifully prepared cooked and presented and suited us as the portions were not large. A true refuge from the tourist bustle in the very heart of the Sassi. Highly recommend
