Find out what Mediterranean restaurants to try in Kairouan. Kairouan (Arabic: القيروان‎  Qeirwān, also known as al-Qayrawan), is the capital of the Kairouan Governorate in Tunisia. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city was founded by the Umayyads around 670. This place is simple, clean, and the service is good. You can get international food (pizza, pasta, etc.), but my recommendation is to go with the plat Tunisienne or plat chwarma. They are super cheap - less than 6 dinars - and quite tasty. Another nice thing is that it is located in easy walking distance from the Hotel Continental. We went a bunch and liked it. Even with an appetizer, you can expect to pay about 6-7 dinars per person max, and leave full and satisfied.

This is a very clean place in the medina. The owner is friendly: the service is very good and kind. The best meal we have had is the mixed grill (not bbq). The meat is very well treated with herbs and spices. This just gives the meat some extra. It is served with homemade French fries. The couscous with lamb however was a bit pale. This dish sure needs a bit more flavour. But it is a good place to eat,

My husband and I stopped here for a short break before we continue our itinerary. It is an old forteresse that was converted to a cafe/ restaurant. The interior decor looks nice.Bathrooms were clean compared to other bathrooms in Tunisia. Their fresh juice was excellent. We didn't order any other food or beverages however it looks clean.

I loved the ambient in old medina and an old house with lot of smaller rooms, nice patio, decorated with ethnographic items, and even with kind of beds near some tables, which looked like beeing in a harem.... The food and service were good, efficient and tasty.
