Athenas Greek Cafe and Bakery

Reviewed By Marti B

Thanks to my husband's great memory, we were able to locate Athenas after watching the episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, where Guy Fieri visited this restaurant. It was well worth the research to locate this little gem in Bakersfield. The restaurant is small and it seems locals are most likely to call in an order for pick-up. (I would too if I lived here!) There's a small patio for outdoor seating and a few tables inside. I ordered the Athena salad which is what we typically think of as a Greek salad, with the addition of the Chicago-style gyro (beef and lamb). The salad was very fresh and dressed nicely and the serving of gyro was generous and delicious. My husband had the Traditional Gyro (pork) with the lemon potatoes. I tasted both and was very impressed. We're determined to try to replicate the lemon potatoes, we liked them so much.My husband had the Greek red wine and it was also very good. I know--I sampled it as well. For dessert, we shared an order of loukoumades, the Greek doughnut ball dessert. It was served with just cinnamon and honey and we were both ooohing and aawwing over their yumminess. The service was mostly friendly and welcoming. The cook was a little grumpy when he told us to just take a seat when we entered. But once our server greeted us, things were handled well. When in Bakersfield, I'll return to Athenas.

Flame & Skewers

Flame & Skewers is a local small chain restaurant that serves an excellent shawarma in a pita. The restaurant was very clean and the facilities are new and well organized. The teenagers running the restaurant have that same "I don't give a damn" attitude that you find at most fast food restaurants, so don't expect great service. However, they did manage to take our order and then yell out our order number when our shawarmas were ready.

Hummus express

Tiring of the usual burger fare while traveling, we tried Hummus Express. Although the food has a bit too much olive oil for my taste, the ingredients are fresh and tasty. I ordered hummus and tabbouleh with pita and my partner had chicken shawarma. The hummus is very silky and the tabbouleh was full of parsley, tomatoes, and cucumbers. The chicken was also pretty good although the white meat was a bit dry. Portions are large. Owner came over and spoke to us about the dishes which was surprising and appreciated. My only suggestion is if you want lighter fare ask them to hold back on the olive oil.
