We had made a reservation and visited at 5 o'clock. The food was carelessly made, alright to look at, but really poor quality, even the rice was soggy. We have lived in Japan for six years and hence had a lot of occasions to eat different types of food. Based on this experience we cannot recommend Hatsune at all.

A delightful restaurant serving almost totally tofu dishes (soya bean curd). Absolutely the best tofu we have ever eaten. Their tofu is produced at a shop 300 metres up the road. English menu with pictures available. Set menu at 1300 yen includes one with a tofu and pork hamburger. Ala carte tofu dishes from 400 yen. Must try include Yaki Atsuage and Agedashi Tofu (400 yen each/US$3.50). The restaurant sits 28 persons and opens from 9am to 4pm, closed on Tuesdays. Located along the main road up to Yoshinoyama (700m down the hill from Chikurinin Gunpoen Ryokan and 200m up the road from Kinpusen-ji). You cannot miss the shop â just opposite the Koban and Fire Station â GPS coordinates N34º22.006´ E135º51.637´. Google âyoshinoyama tofuâ and click the banner at the top slightly left of centre to display some of the menu.

I will always prefer the taste of fresh sushi and the variety of fish that it offers (kakinohazushi is usually limited to mackerel and salmon). The kakinohazushi at Hyotaro did taste good though, and the explanation about sushi culture and history that the chef gave me while I was there was very enlightening, informative and interesting
