My friend has been wanting to come to this place for dinner. So when I suggested a night out, this place was our choice. I also checked online and knew that the reviews on this restaurant has been positive. Overall, our meal was good. For appetizers, I had the fried tofu with dashi powder. To be frank, I was a bit disappointed. The tofu was cut in small cubes and deep fried. Then some soy sauce was dribbled on top of it with some bonita powder (bonita is very common in Japanese cooking. It's also called wood fish). I found this plate was not very satisfying. Tofu is a very blend food and it really requires a lot of skills to make tofu tasty. In the future, this is a dish I will not be ordering. On the other hand, the sushi sashimi boat for 2 we ordered was wonderful. It was an eye catcher. When the food was served, we received a lot of comments and attentions from the neighboring table. We are two guys we really can eat and we finished the whole thing. The fish was fresh and tasty. We really liked it.This place is small and I can see that some of the patrons were on dates. The place does give some intimate feeling. Food is a three star -- meets expectation. I would have given a four had the tofu been great.Service is a three star -- meets expectation. The staffs are very pleasant though they don't speak much English, but enough to take your order and bring you food.Value is a three star -- meets expectation. For the freshness I tasted, I find what they charge to be acceptable.Overall, a three star experience. In the future, skip the tofu.

Looking for a new sushi experience, found Sakae in Union. As seems common in the area, the restaurant resides behind an un-assuming storefront in a small stripmall so be alert as you approach, especially if coming from the opposite direction. Behind the facade, the dining area is of moderate size, with a small sushi bar, somewhat austere with simple tables and chairs but absolutely spotless. The menu is extensive including some Chinese items - check the excellent website - and you can order ahead, order for take-out or apparently even get delivery although not sure of the service area. Service was courteous and efficient however it's important to note that it was early for a weekday lunch so there were only about 6 other diners. Ordered Miso Soup, Seafood Gyoza, Maguro Sashimi, a Shrimp Tempura Roll, and an Autumn Roll ( Spicy tuna, topped with fresh mango, salmon and "chef's special sauce" ). The soup was flavorful with seaweed and diced tofu, the gyoza was tender, perfectly cooked with a good amount of filling, the maguro melted in your mouth, and the rolls were well prepared with just the right amount of rice. I make this last point because the portions were generous for the price which sometimes results in more rice than other ingredients to create the illusion of good value. Most of the hand rolls are under $5, while most of the special rolls are under $12. Lunch for two with tax came to about $32. Definitely will return for a consistency check and to sample more of the menu. In the meantime, recommend a visit by any other sushi foodies.

Went there a Saturday evening on two separate times once for a date night the other girls night out. I was hoping the first time was just a fluke was th reason why I did second time. Advertisement from search was nice looking, wrong. To many empty steamers and slower to refill. The are suppose to have lobster but only pieces were served and king crab legs were small which were smallest ever seen. The sushi station was ok. As we were sitting both times waitress cleared plates away ok. They close at 10:00 so around 8:00 food was disappearing as the were cleaning up. I asked one time for a item and was asked how many did you want, my reply was 1 serving well I guess that wasn't enough for them to get it. Would go out my way to visit again. On positives it's a BYOB.
