My wife and I were in the mood for some Japanese-style food, and since we hadnât yet visited Japan Express before we decided to try it for dinner. (The restaurant is located in the Winn-Dixie plaza along 441 in Tavares). The interior is simple but pleasant. Soothing green walls hint at a Japanese them, but an Asian-style screen was about the only other item contributing to the decor. Overall though the interior was relaxed and comfortable. Two minor (but fixable) complaints about the interior would be: 1) The large posters of dishes on the wall take away from the ambience and feel a tad tacky, and 2) It would be nice if there was more soothing or Asian-style music in the background to match the atmosphere; the rock music really didn't go with the otherwise chill interior. We were a little puzzled we were handed a lunch menu even though we were there after 4pm for dinner, but we ended up ordering two âsetsâ; my wife ordered the shrimp tempura, and I ordered the filet mignon hibachi. We both received a small bowl of miso soup, which was basic yet warm and soothing. Our meals also came with a small ginger salad; the dressing was a little thicker than what comes with most ginger salads and we really enjoyed it. My wifeâs plate was filled with a massive amount shrimp and vegetable tempura. She also received a bowl of white rice on the side. Even though there was a large quantity of food, it was still of a good taste and quality. The tempura batter had that particularly enjoyable lightness, and everything was nicely cooked on the inside. The shrimp and vegetables were both good, on their own and in the thick sauce they were served with. Her rice was also nice and slightly sticky (as it should be), and was a good accompaniment to the meal.My filet mignon hibachi was also quite good and was served on a plate that included the diced steak, noodles, fried rice and vegetables. The steak was not as tender as I would have expected for filet mignon, but it was still very good for the price point. It was all cooked properly and had a nice flavor. I liked the noodles and rice as sides, but would have preferred the meal with either the rice OR the noodles rather than both. That said, everything was tasty and enjoyable.Service was fine although perhaps just a bit too casual. With this being a sit-down, table service restaurant I think servers should at least have a basic uniformâeven if itâs just a polo shirt and khakis rather than an old-looking t-shirt and jeans. In all, it was a pretty decent meal and we would go back. They already have good food for the price point, and I think if they could refine the restaurant just a little bit regarding the things I touched on it would be an even better overall experience. My ideal score for Japan Express would be 3.5 but it was good enough to round up.

You get salad and soup with your meal, the ginger dressing is delicious. Ask for veggies to be cook with no oil and the did, so much better. Good customer service. We order from the menu but they have hibachi seating where they cook the set menu for you.

I was very excited when Saigon Fusion opened because there was nowhere within easy driving distance to get Pho. I keep telling myself when I go there that I really should try something else, but their Pho is so good, I just have to have it, so I can't really comment on their other food. But the Pho is delicious!
