Oshima is known for fish, but if you do not want to eat fish, I recommend this sukiyaki (hot pot) restaurant. You can boil tons of vegetables and meat in a hot pot, with soup made of broth, soy sauce, and sugar. All-you-can-eat vegetable and salad bar. They claim that their drum was used by the navies communicating between ships, and the largest in Japan. I could not verify that is true, but the drum was BIG!

My wife and I were in Agenosho to visit the village where her grandparents had left for America. We were lost and hungry. Mr. Murakami (the owner) took us in and fed us a gourmet feast for lunch. You could see the care and pride in every dish. The sashimi literally melted in my mouth. He also served us grilled fish, a type of fish souffle, an oyster dish, along with rice, pickled vegetables and other dishes. I wish I could put a name to it all but these were dishes I had never seen before. The flavors were indescribable. It was gourmet on the sea with a relaxed family feel. We had been in Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Miyajima, and Oshima. We had many fine meals but nothing compared to this. If you are anywhere near Oshima make it your first stop.
