The food is good, varied and plentiful. However, to avoid very, very long lines arrive at 10:00 or earlier to put your name on the sign up list, and then show up at 11:30 to be let in. The food that is placed out is at room temperature. Be sure to have it heated if you like hot food. The fried oysters were oishi but the miso soup was too strong to me.

Miharashi Ryokan is an old style family-run Japanese ryokan/inn, but the restaurant is open to everybody. The sweet old grandmother in her 80s still brings out the dishes from the kitchen. The ryokan is located in the really beautifully preserved Edo harbour town of Mitarai (like a mini Kyoto), this rustic restaurant seems to cater for anybody, visitors and locals alike. The most popular dish among the locals is the Chuuka-Soba, an Onomichi style ramen. Literally one of the best ramens I have ever eaten and I've been in Japan for over 10 years. The soup is out of this world. They also do a lot of other dishes, all cooked very nicely. Very rustic and very authentic.
This restaurant only opened this year, but it has been getting some great reviews. They managed to revive a really traditional dish from the town - the nabe-yaki udon. These are udon noodles slowly cooked in pots along with their accompanying ingredients. Really tasty and really warms you up on cold days. They also offer a delicious cold udon noodle dish - perfect for summer. Traditionally the nabe-yaki udon was a premium dish sent out to boats docked in the harbour - it was too expensive for locals. But now everyone has a chance to taste the dish at Bishuya at a very reasonable price. The shop manager also speaks English! They also serve a deep-fried fish croquet called a Gansu - which is amazing. I literally ate 3 of these one after the other and they are quite big.
