Things to do in Omihachiman
I stumbled upon this quaint cafe, a bit hidden off the main roads near Hachiman-bori. The lady that served me spoke little English, but treated me with extraordinary kindness when helping me order a taxi. In the meantime, I enjoyed a beautiful light sponge with a side of refreshing fruit and a good cup of coffee, served in dainty dishes with cut glassware. Very feminine, very special. A lovely way to round out my visit to a very pretty neighbourhood. Happy to recommend this cafe when you visit Omihachimon and the canal area.

My store is sushi restaurant. Sushi is made with fresh fish of the Goto Islands, Nagasaki Prefecture. There are staff who can speak Chinese. I pick you up to Omihachiman Station.

Let me start by saying that no matter what else you think you want to eat, go here, order the curry rice. Period, end of discussion.I stumbled across this place while wandering about in Hachiman in a state of extreme hangry (angry hungry), and fortunately my wife suggested we wander down the canal side. There we found Hamagura. This is not a foreign tourist stop - menus are in Japanese only, and we were the only foreigners in the place, which was small, spartan, yet pleasant. Good service, reasonable prices, excellent food.

We found this restaurant totally by accident! We were looking for another one and ended up here. No regrets! We ordered a lunch special featuring Omi-beef. Never had it, after googling it I learned something new. High quality! The lunch set included a clear broth soup with seaweed. The broth was perfect! The beef was super tender and worth the 5100 yen per person we paid. One thing about Japan, it's all about quality not quantity! We were full after lunch. It also included rice, pickled vegetables, salad, konyaku side dish and something else I was not familiar with but delicious. They offer beer, wine, and sake. The restaurant accepts major credit cards including Amex. What an experience! The wait staff was very friendly and attentive too. Awesome place.

You've probably heard of Kobe Beef before, but that's only one of the top three beef brands in Japan. Omi beef is one of the others and served in various ways throughout Omihachiman. Here at this hole-in-the-wall restaurant they specialize in Omi beef croquettes (in other words fried deliciousness). While I'm not particularly fond of fried foods, it does make a tasty snack or lunch and doesn't take too long. A single croquette here (given it is made with Omi beef) is about 300 or 400 yen and a good way to get a taste of Omi beef if you don't want to sit down at a restaurant.

You could smell the beef before going in but it meant you could also smell the beef on you after you leave the place! We ordered two different steak set lunch menus, one where they cooked it before they served it and the other they gave you a plate to cook yourself. We couldn't understand the menu but ordered based on the photos. The beef was wonderful and the price very reasonable for this quality of beef. They also had a shop which raw beef that you could purchase home. It wasn't very luxurious but comfortable environment with a lot of space between tables. It's a relatively convenient drive halfway between the Mitsui Outlet mall Shiga Ryuo and Omihachiman but might be slightly inconvenient if taking public transport. Whist in the area, you could also visit the remains of Azuchi castle and the Nobunaga museum.

One day, one of my bosses in Omihachiman decided that she wanted to eat sukiyaki and this restaurant is well known for serving Omi beef (comparable to Kobe beef). So, I found myself sitting in this cozy restaurant/butchery eating sukiyaki for the first time. Not only was it extremely delicious (better than what I can make for myself), but it was well balanced (they don't overload you with vegetables). Then, it is meant (at least the meal I ate) to be shared, so it isn't something to gobble down, but to enjoy and talk over which makes the experience. The only thing to be careful about is that for 3~4 people it costs about 90~100 dollars, but you would still spend that much or more if you wanted to eat Kobe beef. Also, if you can't get enough of it, you can buy some fresh meat to take home. I would eat here more often if I could...
