Kitaro Bistro of Japan

Reviewed By Aleforge

I went to Kitaro over last weekend for a friend bday party. I had been twice before many years ago and I remember it being pretty good back then. Maybe my memory is bad but this time around things just weren't "great". First of all Kitaro does not take reservations. They allow you to be put down on the "list" but you aren't actually on it until your full party arrives. It makes some sense due to the kind of restaurant it is, but it makes it very difficult to take a group there to eat. Once everyone got there we had to wait about an hour and fifteen minutes before being seated. Waiting is miserable also as they don't have much in the way of a waiting area. It was windy and cold so everyone was piled just inside in a massive crowd (no seating). Once we got seated we were packed at the table shoulder to shoulder. To be honest our group did not fit and should've been told prior that the party was too large. But they shoehorned everyone in anyhow. After a few minutes a guy showed up to take our drink orders, the guy wasn't very personable and seemed like he wasn't happy with his job. I get it though, some people just have bad days but it didn't make things start out well. During that time our soup was brought out, which is just broth with a couple of veggie "pieces" floating around. Along with an awkward spoon to eat it with. I can't say it's horrific, just kind of pointless. After that we all got a salad which was pretty good. It had some type of creamy sweet dressing, lettuce (obviously) and crunchy noodles. Our chef came out and did his entire "scripted" show. At other places I have been the chefs seem more personable and less restricted on banter. He was finishing up at another table while we were eating our salads and his interactions were the exact same word for word with ours. I also am nearly positive he was forcing an accent to make things more "authentic". Which made the entire thing bizarre. Be prepared for the standard "Japanese ketchup, volcano, egg slide" jokes. My wife and I both ordered the filet and chicken as well as an order of crab rangoon. Everything was decent, I am not a fan of their rice due to covering it with mustard which really stands out. But everything else tasted well enough. They also give you two sides of sauce, the universal "yummy" and the soy sauce that they flair up with the word "ginger". Oh and you get a side of noodles. One word of advice, and something I have (and most) do at these places. Don't eat everything as it's served. It's almost an automatic impulse to just eat things as they get tossed on the plate, but obviously you end up with just meat in the end. And... well your going to get the iconic "shrimp" flip into the mouth routine. They do it at every place and it's something that I don't find super amusing. I am probably not a very fun person though, however I don't eat seafood so that probably takes away from it. The funniest part of it however is people saying "no thanks" and getting smacked in the face anyways. I don't know if the chef can't hear them or does it anyways but its the only good part. The price is also a bit high for the food your getting (we spent 100). Obviously you go there for the experience but really in the end it's a meal. Your paying triple for what you would've at a decent take out place just to have some shrimp and canned jokes tossed around.

This place is next door to the place where my wife and daughter get their nails done. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the atmosphere is comfortable, the food is excellent, the portions are good, the servers are attentive and pleasant, and the prices are reasonable. Will definitely go back.

I frequent the Sushi AI in Clayton and enjoy it. I took my family to this one since it's near our home. We were underwhelmed. Our server was really abrupt and grouchy, and she charged my husband for all-you-can-eat, even though he didn't eat any of it and ordered his own meal. The food is decent and priced fairly, and tastes the same as the one in Clayton, but the overall atmosphere leaves something to be desired.
