Sushi Bar pirates has been recently opened in the Koblenz area. Unlike most 'japanese' restaurants in Koblenz and indeed in the region, it is actually staffed, owned and run by a Japanese husband and wife team. From atmosphere, the restaurant has been established in what was a bar, and still has the original bar and even bowling alley in the cellar. The restaurant is however very modern / chique in appearance which suits the cuisine very well.We visited on a Sunday night, and we tried several of the recommended sushi platters on the Menu. The fish is of excellent quality and as good as we've eaten even in Duesseldorf or Frankfurt. We also had edamame as a starter, and miso soup with our meals. All in all, it costed about 15 euros a head.We would thoroughly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking to eat japanese in the Rheinland-Pfalz or Nord-Rhein Westfalen areas.

My favourite sushi place in Koblenz. I love the sushi there. I must say: do not judge the book by its cover. While the place is spotless clean, it clearly lacks interior design or charming atmosphere.Still: the food is superb, and we go there every time when in town.

This was recommended to us by some friends and I was pleasantly surprised at the wide menu options and interesting food on offer. The tables were all bench style and communal although tables for two and four were also possible. I think you were supposed to wait to be seated but there was no one at the door so we sat ourselves. The waitress provided the utensils and menus and was efficient in taking our order and serving our drinks. The menu is large with a lot of options from sushi to curries. We ordered several starters between us and some mains. The summer rolls are not the traditional Vietnamese style rolls but similar with a variety of filling options (we choose chicken breast, and one with fried prawns) which were served with a little salad and a lovely soy-sesame dressing. Spring rolls were also good and more traditional in size (small finger size rolls) also served with a bit of accompanying salad bits and sauce. For the mains, we had a duck breast curry, salmon sashimi and beef stir-fry. All were huge in portions with the stir fry and curry being tailored to a German palate with plenty of traditional ingredients, as well as some extra vegetables. It is not my purist cup of tea personally but the crowds really enjoyed the taste variety of each dishâs composition. The salmon sashimi was very generous and served with salmon roe and grated wasabi â a unique preparation which provided quick sinus clearing flavours. This place is a really interesting addition to the Koblenz dining scene which seemed to be well received from the volume of guests attending. Whilst those who are very accustomed to eating Thai or Vietnamese or Japanese dishes may feel a sense of confusion at the menu, for what it is and who it is serving â I was impressed to see this here. Would I come back here â I am not so sure as I like cuisines separate with clearly defined flavours which are indicative of the origin of the food. If I wanted Thai â I would go to Tamrap Thai across town. There is no flavour hook to bring me back to Papa Umi â but that being said, should my local friends and family be keen on it, I would not mind to return. This is a solid Asian restaurant offering some interesting flavours to try and a very refreshing option to consider in the Koblenz culinary landscape.
