Positions itself as an izakaya, but it closes for the day at 4:00 p.m. (1600 hours). That is like a striptease artist performing in a burka and never taking it off.

We are here with three small children. They gave us fish soup and mikans at the end but otherwise we ordered one set and some sashimi. It was all super fresh quality and delicious, but our total worked out to over 500 yen per piece of sashimi. The cost would be prohibitive for us to go back, although they were kind and accommodating. I somewhat felt like they took advantage of is with their very steep prices on a sleepy Sunday night in their town.

In the thick of a bambu forest, just of the Nanaduru Waterfalls hike we found this little gem. The owner/chef gave us a very personal welcome. He found toys for the kids and spent quite some time helping us understand the (all Japanese) menu. It was worth it. The old house is truly genuine and full of atmosphere. The food is tasty, rustic and served with an attention to detail. The menu is very traditional, oddly enough the deserts are takes on Western classics (very cheesy cheesecake (not so sweet, very good), tangy citrus sorbet (made from local citrus fruits) and blueberry and cheese toast (yes, better than it sounds)All in all, the setting, the food and the service truly was outstanding!

Saitama Prefecture, Japan Food Guide: 3 Asian food Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Wako

mid-February 2017 We picked this place due to location from the gourmet info leaflet at Tourist Info Centre. We arrived about 1130 hour, jotted down our name on the listing hung at the door n queued. There was already about 6-8 waiting already. Waited about 30 minutes, but with the nice sakura lining the river banks, we were happy with the wait. Inside, our sets were served after about 15 minutes. Shorter than we expected. It is of the Kansai style - grilled without first steam-cook the eel (unagi). The base-sauce is very good also, not the sweet type. The side seasoned veggies were delicious too n not salty. We think the kaba-yaki (non-soyu base) type will good also. We are aiming to go back for it the next time. Pretty big volume unless you are a quite a big eater. We ordered the 2 pieces donburi type. Beer or osake is also available for order. There are a few counter seats, tables and more tatami seatings. Table-sharing is common at peak lunch time. Yes, the restaurant has some free parking but it is about 8 minutes walk from Kawazu station. The attendants are very friendly n polite, adding to the delight in enjoying a great meal.

The wasabi don is made famous by the "lonely gourmand" TV series in Japan. I watched the episode after planning the trip. We appeared to be the only foreigners on the two visits there. The fresh wasabi is not very spicy, and when added to the high quality rice, bonito and special soy sauce, tastes wonderful. It is hard to imagine how such simple ingredients could be so delicious, but such is the power of high quality good ingredients. We ate there twice and thoroughly enjoyed it.The natural hiking trail to see the 7 waterfalls is beautiful and romantic, just as described in the Nobel-price winning novel, Izu's dancer. The wasabi don tastes even better after the hike.
