The atmosphere in the restaurant is lovely. There's a list outside where you write your name and the number of people down and they will call your name when it's your turn. (Note: if you miss your name, you'd probably need to wait for a little bit longer, 5-10 mins)The prize are reasonable for such excellent dinning approximately ¥2000-4000 per person.Service: They service are great, though if you cannot speak Japanese, there might be some problems when you tried to communicate, but they'd understand if you use simple English term or body language.Normally people would order shabu shabu with beef riceThe soup base for the shabu shabu is rather sweet, but the beef is very soft and tender. There are steps to follow in order for you to get the best taste, the instructions are written on a card, where English, Chinese and Japanese are available.I also tried the beef rice (the mostly raw one) , which is delicious (the restaurant is also famous for its beef rice). The beef is more and softer than expected. There are instructions for this as well. The desert is very sweet, which I would recommend it to people who love eating sweet.

Slightly hard to get to unless you've rented a car. These area is famous for their soba but various places serves various levels at different prices. I found Sasakura to serve high quality soba at a reasonable price, not so cheap but not so expensive. They are very popular and their opening hours are short so get there early.

This soba sure goes down average. A cross section of soba and the form are irregularity. But the soba had a delicious taste when you chew. Moderate amount. There were number of menu. Tempura was delicious. Crisp big tempura! And soba-yu,the hot water from boiling noodles, was good.Because chairs are small, you can not relax. But the staff are friendly and attentive. Good.

Komagane city in Japan is famous for their Katsu-Don. Unlike Katsu-Don in Tokyo, these area's Katsu-Don is sauce based. Meiji-tei is famous for their Katsu-Don and they have a few shops here and there but not many. Their Karuizawa branch is relatively not crowded. Not very cheap but worth a try.

Never mind the impeccable precision with the part or brand of beef when the beef aficionados mention this topic. Just be patient and queue up at Aging Beef Karuizawa and you won't forget the order of platter - with variety of beef for your taste buds. Since everyone is busy roasting the beef, there should not be concern about fire hazard. No wonder cigarette smoking is allowed at this shop - and it can be annoying to many of us, I have to admit. It doesn't make sense, I should have plucked up my courage to the restaurant owner, because those who are silly enough to keep smoking will forget the beef and overcook the cuisine. What a pity.

We ate the recommended menu, the tempura with soba. It was ok, the tempura was actually too greasy even there was a paper underneath. We thought the restaurant is over rated, it is quite normal food (not a wow level)

I love to eat at Suju (there is this original restaurant in Karuizawa, and a couple branches in Tokyo, including across from Tokyo Station). The food is so fresh and tasty. If you like to eat vegetable-, tofu- and beans-oriented dishes, with fish and other fresh ingredients, this is the place. They do wonderful things with miso (not only soup, but as a sauce for vegetables and for fish).I always take home some of their products -- not only miso, but beans. Staff is helpful in English and atmosphere is lovely. Also centrally located near the shopping street, so it's easy to find.

I love this no frill standing soba stall at the Karuizawa Eki. It is so convenient and the food is delicious. I have tried a few standing soba stalls in various locations but no one beats this in taste. The soba costs a bit more than other stalls, eg. its tempura soba is ¥470, while other place ¥390, however the soba here tastes much better. So it's worthwhile to pay extra. Itadakimasu!

Sonmin-Shokudo offers a delicious dining experience and great hospitality. You can enjoy set meals or a la carte dishes made using seasonal ingredients.
We visited Sonminshokudo for two days, both for dinner. It's a casual Japanese restaurant serving set menu and a la carte plus seasonal special set. It's was quite popular and we need to wait for 15 mins to get our seats for our first visit. The next day we head there earlier so we can avoid the queue. It's next to a public onsen that's why it's attracted quite a lot of customers. Overall, the food is delicious and price is very reasonable. We tried four different set in our two visits. the chicken set is highly recommended!!! They do offer vegetarian dish, both on the set menu and salad, offering fresh local vegetables and very delicious however as the other posts mentioned, it's not a lot of choices if you are a strict vegetarian.

We went in for lunch around 11.15 am on weekdays in July. The seats were more than half full. The menu selection was quite limited but almost every dish was signature dish.
