We stumbled upon this place and it was fantastic. They speak no English but have pictures of the dishes. Their gyoza are fantastic and they were able to make them vegetarian. The fried rice too was great. Can’t recommend this place enough. Such lovely people
This restaurant serves mainly locals and local delicacies. There was no English menu and after some guesswork in communicating with the staff we more or less got what we wanted. However the food was a bit too salty for us.
There must have been a change in staff from the previous review here because not only was this some of the best food I've had in Japan, but the staff were extremely kind and attentive. We spoke to them at length, the chef came to say hello and we were offered some excellent shochu - they have a vast local selection. The interior is warm and inviting and in the old style. The fish, which I chose from the tank, was prepared expertly in the kitchen, not a shred was wasted. My partner ordered the best beef I've ever tasted in my life, it melted in the mouth and was so flavoursome it took us some time to eat it as you only needed to eat small pieces to let the divine flavours wash over your tongue. The portions were beautifully presented and indeed on the smaller side but not izakaya small, the quality was really excellent though. Will certainly come back if we pass through Hitoyoshi again.

This was the restaurant on 1/F of Ayu no Sato, we had 3 kaiseki dinner there during our stay.Food quality was satisfactory, but they brought out all hot dishes while we were still eating the cold entree. We made an extra order of baked abalone with miso paste in shell, only couple slices of abalone was served, not the whole piece. Friendly service was provided by Nisina san who spoke good English.

Get bento (lunch box) here to enjoy train trip or just to have your lunch in Hitoyoshi. So many options, but unfortunately it closes too early for evening train.

This is likely the most popular grilled eel restaurant in Hitoyoshi, unagi served was even better in Miyajima. We had an early dinner there at 17:00 when it opened at night, and when we returned for lunch on a Saturday, locals were queueing up at 11:30. The best charcoal grilled eels we had tried before among so many places we had been around Japan.
