There is a large hall for large groups, but get one of the little huts for the time-travel experience. Private houses with tatami around a IRORI (a charcoal-pit fire) where you cook your meal- river trout, scallops, they have set plans with shish kabob. Rice with TOROIMO (grated long potato), SANSAI (mountain veggies) miso soup. Be sure to ask for ATSUKAN- Hot sake! 4 people about 20,000yen with alcohol.Call ahead (in Japanese) and they might pick you up from one of the train stations.MOMIJI (maples) are really wonderful here but the timing is later than the usual Tokyo momiji.Cross the street and you can walk (jog) around Tamako Lake, about 2 hours.

Arrived early 11:30 and were lucky to get the large booth by the windows, with tatami and horikotatsu-style seating. Their tempura is delicious so we ordered the cold soba noodles (tuske soba) lunch set for 980 yen, comes with pickles, toppings, rice with katsuo tsukudani. We also ordered garlic sprouts tempura- wonderful! Don't forget to ask for soba-yu at the end of your meal to make a soup of your dipping sauce. The templed ceiling is in the Gasho-Tsukuri style of old wooden houses but with a very modern flavor, dramatic lights. Very spacious, not cramped at all for a soba restaurant! Very child friendly. No English, but the menus have large pictures so you can see what you are ordering.
