Espo's started eons ago as Esposito's, a neighborhood restaurant, and despite tweaks to the name and decor it remains a reliable and comfortable place for old-fashioned Italian food. My husband and I stopped for lunch recently --what a bargain!! My husband had an appetizer of "fried scallops" that was big enough for a regular entree. The scallops were fresh and delicious; he was thrilled. I had a small, also very fresh, lunch salad, followed by chicken marsala over spinach (pasta is another choice) that was absolutely delectable. We shared the dish and brought home enough for supper, adding a little more chicken and spinach. Meals come with fresh focaccia bread. Dinners are even more generous -- I've never seen anyone leave without taking some home. This is not a place that's trying to be trendy and it's far from the touristy part of Portland (though close to the bus/train transport center).

Restaurant located in front of Harbor Fish Market on where Commercial and Pearl Streets meet. Entrance on Commercial St.
Given the ambience and presentation of authenticity, Solo does not deliver like they should. On arrival, I made a Rez but was told Open Table accepted it, but "we're not seating and in this area, so we don't really have a table". However, she did end up seating us in that area, not a great introduction. Olive oil does not compliment sourdough bread that tastes like rye, and the olive oil could be better quality. The heirloom tomatoes, prosciutto and fresh mozz were delicious. The eggplant was pressed too hard and was really tough. It also needed more sauce. The one pasta dish on our table was over cooked. I will say the strip steak was perfectly cooked med-rare and really delicious. The bread sticks we're not light and crisp, they seemed mildly stale. The focaccia was odd and the cookies were rather tasteless and just crumbled apart when you tried to eat them. You just want a really good piece of semolina bread with Italian food, and perhaps almond floured cookies. I know semolina is not popular in northern Italy, but even plain crusty Italian bread would be better. Loved the wine list. Plenty of Italian wines to choose from.

Modern Italian restaurant with cuisine inspired from the humble foods of Southern and Central Italy that incorporates local Maine products.
This tiny restaurant is a wonder. Just 8 tables and a half dozen seats at a bar--it would be full with about 25 guests total--Piccolo does it right on all levels. The 2 servers doubled as bartender, making among other things generous and great Negronis. Every bite savored by my wife and me was near perfection, starting with the crazy good warm olives. The chef clearly has the time to give every plate attention, including the outrageously delicate peekytoe crab salad I had. Just a few simple ingredients--corn kernels, lettuce, crab, paper-thin shaved radishes, a sweet corn sauce and a basil oil ring around it all--and it was divine. We split a pasta dish of housemade cavatelli in an unctuous, deeply flavored lamb neck ragu. Amazing. Our entrees were also spot on, including my black bass with crispy skin and buttery, melt in your mouth flesh. All sauces, vegetables, and sides show a lot of love and display the fruits of long, slow, patient cooking. Our servers were great and had significant wine knowledge too. This was a most memorable evening! Cannot recommend it enough.

We've been going to Angelone's for years. Always excellent pizza. Thin dough or you can order double dough if you're very hungry. The sauce is excellent. Not spicy or too sweet. Perfect ingredients for the perfect pizza.

Had never been to a Portland Pie Company until this Fall and this was my second location to visit. Liked the location and the atmosphere inside was nice. Service was prompt and pleasant, and the food was very good. My son lives just a few blocks away so we hope to visit again.

Bruno's is a casual family run restaurant serving everything from steak sandwiches to homemade pastas. Customers can enjoy lunch or dinner in our dining room with an open kitchen, or you can also choose from our full menu in our tavern side complete with
The veal saltimbocca was the thinnest veal I've ever seen. It was only barely thicker than the prosciutto and the sage only dusted the top. The sauce was excellent; the garlic mashed potatoes were among the best I've ever had. The vegetables were overcooked. Service left a lot to be desired. The staff reached across my wife's food to pick up a dirty plate. He also tried to take a plate while the person was still eating. We needed to ask that water glasses be refilled. We asked if the Cannoli had chocolate bits on the ends. The waitperson said, "No." We should have asked it the cannoli had chocolate in it at all, because it did.

Since 2009 when we opened our first slice shop on Congress Street in downtown Portland, we've been striving to elevate the pizza experience. It starts with the ingredients - high quality, local when possible - and the toppings - creative and comforting. M

This used to be my favorite Italian restaurant until recently being sold. What we all feared has happened, small servings, terrible wines and double the price! The staff has all changed as well. This restaurant used to be standing room only and you would have to make a reservation, last night there were only 2 other couples there. I ordered eggplant with spaghetti and the waitress came back 5 minutes later and said they were out of spaghetti - its an Italian restaurant!? We had to ask for water and bread, I requested the Caesar salad and my companion ordered the regular green salad - we got 2 Caesars! My eggplant was not typically prepared, just 4 thick slices with cheese on top baked to the point of burnt edges. The pasta they did have, angel hair was served in a soup/cereal bowl, water came in a beer glass! We tried two wines both putrid! The new owner obviously has little to no experience in the restaurant industry. Our server was spastically running around, I can't imagine how she'd be if she had more than one table to wait on. On a high note, the pasta, sauce, and Caesar dressing were good and I'm assuming the prior owner negotiated those recipes. Otherwise it was a complete disappointment and I won't be returning. Bummer, anyone know of a good Italian restaurant in Portland Maine? Guess I'll be going to Olive Garden!Thank you for your feedback but I am confused we have the same staff and the same menu. I truly wish you let the manager on duty know so we could of spoken to you. Sorry for your dissatisfied. I can assure you that if you come is again you will not be disappointed.

This is Portland's "place to go" for all the sorts of ingredients that you may be less likely to find in regular big supermarkets. Charcuterie. Cheeses. Pastas. Sauces. You get the idea. If that's what you are looking for, check out Micucci Grocery. We bought a lot.
