The population was 2,104 at the 2010 census, down from 2,227 at the 2000 census. Portola is located on the Middle Fork of the Feather River, and was named after Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolá, despite his never having actually explored the surrounding area. The place name is generally mispronounced, with stress on the middle syllable, thus ignoring the accent mark in its namesake's surname.

We were two couples travelling from Oregon to California overland and happened on the Family Corner by chance. We realised that we'd probably be too late arriving at our destination for a meal so dropped into the local grocery store for some beers and advice about where to eat. They recommended the Family Corner and they were not wrong. The food was good and the service quick, not to mention the IPA which was the best beer so far on our North American trip. The price was reasonable too and the staff and other customers were very friendly. The place looks like it is doing well, always a good sign.

We had the pesto chicken and the salmon Puccini. Both were delicious and very filling. We also had wine by the glass, warm bread, and fresh salads. We will return!

We are traveling nearby and found this in Trip Advisor I was hungry for pizza and so here we went. We had two pizzas and a chicken Marsala dish. Everyone was happy including our more picky people. Lovely staff, good range of choices of dishes, wine and beer.
