Carillon is a distinct and unique pearl in the whole of Valle d'Aosta. Some time ago, I wrote for Trip Advisor of another outstanding restaurant in one of lateral valleys, Val Grisenche (flowing into Valle d'Aosta). I described it as âuniqueâ. Now, after long months of criss-crossing the many later valleys, I can only say I came by another such rarity.Carillon is sitting on a beautiful âbalconâ(âbalconyâ), in the village of Ozein, on the slopes of the mountain Punta della Pierre, a peak with a most stirring geometry. From this restaurant there is a magnificient panorama running from a unique angle on the full Mont Blanc and all the way to the Grand Combin, a hundred kilometers of alpine dramatic summits. Carillon has an outdoor patio, in the form of a large tent with sun soaked windows and an elegant indoor sitting. My companion and myself, both in the business of writing books, travel more than half an hour, often 3 or 4 times a week, to simply sit in this beautifully decorated tent, where in absolutely pristine silence, we work, as we glimpse in the distance these eternal summits. By noon, after 3 hours of work, a high quality lunch is served with dishes that suggest the chef is a famous refined culinary mind, recently retired from Milan or Turin. In effect, the chef is a surprising young man from the mountain range who is just unbelievably imaginative, daring and light in his constructions, a triple of adjectives that rarely come together. This cover his primi, with a truly unreasonable range of interesting pastas, his secondi, with never-pedestrian servings of bistecca or roasted meat, and the climax, truly refined home-made cakes, each as innovative as the next. One only hopes some fancy gastronomic hands from Milan or Turin wont discover this gem and snatch him away to the big city. Complementing him as host and manager is a young lady, also full of grace. In all, the combination of unusual exposure to the sun and the energetic-cum-elegant character of the hosts make Carillon a delicate pearl in the midst of mountain prairies, where it is most uncommon to find such finesse. The two hosts brim with optimism, reflected in the music played in evening servings and in the beguiling internal decoration. As I said, a pearl.

Not sure if I should be sharing this because I don't want la Pineta to get crowded. Absolutely incredible lunch. All patrons ate same food at same time, can't remember the number of courses but included anti-pasta, pasta, first and second courses and a wonderful dessert menu. Home cooked, no fancy trimmings but tasty, hot, filling food - no other Brits for miles around - and all for 20 euros! Meal started at 12h30 and we left about 14h30. Well worth the trip out to Ozein, Amayvilles - about 20 minutes outside Aosta towards Cogne. As they say in Italy, gnam, gnam!Good for kids and grandmas too.

Great location and very friendly service however the food was out of sync. I had a meat dish of gorgonzola wrapped in radicchio leaves rolled into what looked and tasted like a boiled grey thin beef cutlet surrounded by slimy porcini mushrooms. No thank you. That was the main course. The starter looked good on the menu but was essentially some overly thick cornmeal pancakes with various toppings like, blood sausage, and sweating lardo, sprinkled with icing sugar !There is an obvious attempt to rework traditional vallee d'asota foods into something else however it fails to do the business. Among our group of four nobody thought the food passed muster, so enjoy the many free home-made digestivos and enjoy the views. Bear in mind though that a lunch for four with starters, main course, bottle of proseco, half litre of house wine , a bottle of sparkling water and four coffees cost us 130 euros.

This was a suggested restaurant from a local. We were pleasantly surprised, (weâve had lots of bad experiences with Italian restaurants) food was good, as was the service. We recommend you try the the goats cheese salad with walnuts and honey oil dressing. Also try the stewed beef with mashed potatoes and donât miss the dessert. Especially good for those who are not weight conscious. The cost was 35⬠a head for a light 3 course meal. Main course was 20⬠plus.Dear Frank, Thank you so much for your comment. We are glad to hear that you spent a nice evening with us, we work hard everyday to make our best and to improve. We hope you will come to visit us again during your next visit in Aosta Valley, Trattoria di Campagna e Staff.

Authentic place (It is a huge success with local people) with almost 100 types of pizzas in the menu. The local families dinner here mostly and therefore the place is not very quiet due a lot of kids. The pizza & deserts are superb!!!If you are pizza fan, you should visit this place definitely !Avalon is on my list of favorites pizza now, I would go there again.

This was our first overnight stop after the Montblanc tunnel, driving from UK to Italy and we loved it! Simple accommodation, delicious home grown food, in a peaceful setting. (We booked by phone from England using their mobile no. +39 338 884 2812 but discovered that their landline is 0039 0165 95395)If you are happy with spotlessly clean, rustic accommodation, (a comfortable bed) and a superb dinner, then weâd suggest staying here. The setup is a family run Agriturismo not far from Cogne which is beautiful in late May. They have a small restaurant where the cook is a builder by day!! His passion for cooking shines through. Truly excellent, especially after our ghastly supper in France the night before that cost more than twice as much!! Itâs about 10 mins from the motorway at Amyville and in truth, is a âwork in progressâ but next time weâll stay with them for longer to see more of this beautiful area and to enjoy more of their food. Although we spoke in Italian, the cookâs wife speaks English and is warm and welcoming, as was all the family. â¬110 B&B and dinner.

Imagine a large round of Vacherin Mont d'Or (raw milk cheese) sitting in a wooden case and heated in the oven to melting, served with mountain grown potatoes, a variety of cold cut prosciutto, salami, capocollo and pickled onions and gherkins. Now imagine a thick hamburger size bun with the top cut off and the bottom side hollowed out to hold an entire rondelle of squishy melted brie, and served with a side bowl of boiled mountain potatoes wrapped in bacon; pickled onions and gherkins on the side. Wash this down with a glass or two of local select wines and enjoy the ambience. By the way the mountain potatoes are grown locally within 1000 to 1800 metre altitude. The village of Ossein just above Aymavilles is renowned for its dark skinned and sweet tasting potatoes. Recommended by locals and after a couple visits I'd bet this is the local hotspot in Aymavilles. The place was hopping each evening we went. There are cute outdoor open ended cabins for groups of 8 or so as well as tables and chairs. Indoors the ground floor is a bustle of the bar, kitchen and half dozen tables with more tables below. Staff are friendly and you can make reservations. The menu is on the wall offering about a dozen or so 'aperitivo' food options. You can't miss the place. Just drive into Aymavilles and just before the first traffic circle across from the 'Municipio' (town hall) look for a place to park. It's obvious.

Three girls on tour wanting a taste of Italy and we got it. Good value, beautifully presented, three different dishes, some surprises for example the home made ravioli was served cold but was delicious, jolly and informative staff. Don't buy the house wine, choose a local quality wine to complete the experience.

We dined here on our first night in Aosta. The food, wine and service was great. The menu varies to suit locally available fresh produce. Lovely central location and alfresco dining added to the overall experience. Prices very reasonable. Certainly worth a visit.
