Afraid of the place being a tourist trap, I did not want to go in. But the place I wanted to go to was booked up, so I gave Artichoke a try.Itâs good that I did; hiding under the 3/3 beat accordion music and kitschy décor was a real Italian restaurant. They served homemade bread and olive oil with a touch of basil and hot pepper. The bread was lightly toasted and had a nice, chewy texture. I tried the mussels with garlic for a starter. They were served flamed. Showboating aside, they were very good and had a nice pesto accent. There were many, many items to choose from and I finally settled on Spaghetti Bolognese for my main course. It was, in a word, perfect. The pasta was cooked al dente and the Bolognese sauce was delicious and had a bit of a fiery bite to it. Wonderful.I was done at around 8pm, and I noticed that every table in the place was occupied, and I was the only tourist! So be sure to book ahead if you can.
Maybe it was because it was a Sunday night, but this place was very quiet.Wandered out of my hotel looking for a restaurant. After a long wander, I found this place. Outside dining area. Polished wood inside. Felt like a rather spacious restaurant in Italy.Ordered a pizza. Waiters hovered. Maybe it was just because there were so few customers that I felt as though they were all watching me. Real pizza oven, great authentic pizza. Italian-y soda to wash it down. There were matbe two couples there when I got there. Noone else came in.Loved the food, atmosphere a bit strained. Might have been better if I were a couple.
The menu is all in Japanese, but I could make out enough of the Katakana to target a gorgonzola and melba toast starter and a special beef salad as a main dish. They were both excellent, really tops, and would be a âbest Italian food in the areaâ for most places in the US.The Gorgonzola was a mousse, and was fragrant, oddly delicate and at the same time at peace with the strong gorgonzola flavor. The toast was thin and crisp, and was not flavored, which would have taken away from the cheese. It was perfect for the role of adding a crunchy texture to the great taste of the gorgonzola mousse. I had high expectations, but I was still surprised at how good it was.The salad was flat- out amazing. Hokkaido pumpkin, sautéed turnips, baby leaves of several lettuces, a few small cherry tomato slices and a perfectly- braised and sliced â and very tender â beef. I think it must have been a sirloin cut, just exquisite. The rest was some shaved cheese â Reggiano? And there was a sprig of rosemary, which had been sautéed or roasted enough that some of the leaves were crisp enough to bite off. The dressing was a balsamic vinegar reduction, perfectly done. It must be the best steak salad I have ever had, and I have had some good ones. The decor is nothing special, but they have some nice hanging fabrics to give some privacy between tables.Highly recommended. It is a cash- only place, so be aware!
