Things to do in Samar Island
I was 'greeted' rather sullenly by the Filipina female proprietor who informed me that I 'had to order first' before going to a seat in the outdoor restaurant. I did so and was then escorted by a male waiter to a table of tiles around a large tree a couple of metres from the sea, so despite the inclement weather it was a nice view.A company group of 30 from Catarman was occupying all rooms, had a seminar underway and enjoyed a buffet lunch in the main seating area.No 'service' water was offered. The sweet and sour pork and special ('veggie') fried rice was fine and arrived still hot at my table as should always be the case. Together with a drink, the bill was an inexpensive P185.The waiter's English was limited.A large sign at reception advertised a P35 (bargain!) Halo-Halo, the famous Filipino shaved ice dessert. I asked for one and was informed that it was 'not available Sir.' Given that the ingredients for this are not perishable, why haven't they ordered them from Allen on Samar Island (or Manila?) Why is the sign still stuck up at the reception booth? Only in the Philippines!Crystal Sands Beach Resort about a kilometre down the road past San Antonio Island's rudimentary port is the only establishment on the island that caters for foreigners and discerning Filipinos' dining needs.Haven of Fun needs to sharpen its act.

Whether your good for two or with friends and family or even big parties, pebbles and tides can surely accommodate you.
In the backblocks of Philippines I am used to finding a filling meal (mostly not star cuisine though) for P200 or so.The prices are higher at Crystal Sands' Beach Resort on San Antonio Island but everyone knows the adage 'you get....'And so it is here.My lunch meal of chicken and my dinner of lapu lapu in sweet and sour (lapu lapu being the 'grouper' fish as we name it in Australia) were both terrific, tasty and (fish especially) a very generous P300 for 300 grams although the fish looked larger than that.San Miguel Light was available and what a drop it is.No mosquitos annoyed me in the open air restaurant as I conversed with a UK - Dutch young couple who both rated the Philippines highly despite the girl never having been to Asia before.I have separately reviewed the accommodation at Crystal Sands. It too gets a 'tick.'

Misty Blue is a must stop for anyone making their way down to Guiuan, or the greater Eastern Samar area. You can expect the best service of your life while enjoying drinks in the beautiful saltwater pool or having a romantic dinner in one of the palapas overhanging the ocean. Greg, the owner, is an absolute gentleman and a wonderful person to just idly chat away the day with. They have now, more or less fully recovered from the typhoon and have added on several rooms for guests to stay. Accommodations are few and far in between in Guiuan and this is the only hotel I would recommend in town. It is the only place with decent service and the only spot where someone can really relax, given the pool and easy access to the sea.Greg will go out of his way to assure that everything you need is provided, whether that is a good deal on a private boat for some island hopping, or a backup generator when the power goes out (even if you are the only guest). Misty Blue offers great woodfire pizzas (as long as you aren't expecting Italian) the best breakfast in Guiuan (maybe the best in the Philippines) a full service bar and just an all around great time. I really can't say enough about the folks here, do stop by and support what they are doing.
