Ollantaytambo has some of the oldest continuously-occupied buildings in South America. Once a stronghold of Inca resistance to Spanish colonization, it's remarkably well-preserved. Many travelers visit Ollantaytambo because it's the beginning of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, but don't rush through—the ruins are fascinating.
Things to do in Ollantaytambo
While on a cooking tour in Ollantaytambo, we had a translator attend. We asked her where we should go while in town. She said that over 5 months, she typically eats at the same place every time if she doesnât cook at home. She told us that it was good and cheap. We decided to try it since none of us have had arrepas. The owner, from Venezuela, has been in ollantaytambo for about 18 months. She doesnât speak English, and we didnât speak Spanish, but we found it pretty easy to communicate using key words, especially if you have a translator app. Well, my only regret was trying the place the night before we left. We devoured our arepas and then at breakfast the next morning decided that we had to go back and get more. She makes them fresh after you order. It took about 15 minutes for dinner and then about 25 for lunch because we all ordered different kinds and we were her first customers of the day. Wow! They did not disappoint. I had the pork arepa with avocado and cheese, and the next day I had chicken arepa with grilled plantains. She provides a garlic aioli, an avocado crema, and a chili sauce for you to use as much or as little as you want. All 3 of us said it was the best thing we ate our entire trip to Peru. We also tried the vegetarian and ground beef. These are even perfect on the go! We got 3 for our car ride back to Cusco. As soon as I get back home from this trip, I am looking for a Venezuelan restaraunt at home. And you cannot beat the price, one arepa is enough for a meal and they are 7-10 soles (thatâs about 3$) She could easily charge more. She was also one of the nicest people I met, our compliments on her food meant the world to her. She tried to teach us some Spanish and learn some English during our time together. We hugged her neck on our way out because you could tell that she was just a special, kind hearted woman. Next time I come back through ollantaytambo, I will definitely be going to visit Lily! I took pictures of her menu in October 2019, it could change, but Lilly was willing to make the arepas any way we would like and Iâm sure that wonât change for her next visitors. Grab one if you are in ollantay, you will not be disappointed, and tell her that 3 girls from the US sent you!
Our cosy 16-seat restaurant is now open to non-guests of Apu Lodge- please book if you can. Peruvian recipes, international cuisine and local ingredients and our garden inspire our recipes, and guest chefs have worked with local staff to create a short me
Host was really nice, helped us with our bags. Great value. Hotel was a walk along an old Inca street, just off the market square. Beautiful gardens. Would recommend.

We arrived in Ollantaytambo during our dieta for San Pedro, and were delighted to discover this fantastic little place. They cater to veggies, vegans and nutters like us who are following special diets for plant ceremonies (they even have advice in their menus dependent on which medicine you've arranged to have).Awesome meals all round, they do food from breakfast to dinner, and even put together fantastic quality lunch boxes for those who have travel plans leaving the town (we were leaving for Machu Picchu and would be travelling all day, so portable food was great for us!). They do a great selection of smoothies and herbal infusions too.We even got some great advice from the staff about where was nice to go for a drink in Ollantaytambo, and where to eat near Machu Picchu once we got there!Thank you for seeking us out. We are so happy you enjoyed your food. We are just renovating our top floor so if you visit again you will be able to enjoy Kombucha or cold brew coffee in the sun and enjoy our view.

We were taken here by guide, Cynthia (Pure Peru). The food is phenomenonal - local ingredients (most of the veg & salad is from the kitchen garden) and the drinks were brilliant too! Definitely the best place to eat at in Ollaytaytambo and super conveniently located in the train station. We had the locro (pumpkin & cheese stew), 3 meat grill (alpaca, beef & lamb perfectly cooked) and the garden vegetable salad. Finished off with cheesecake, cornbread with berries and Peruvian cacao brownie. Our waitress Silvia was a delight and very attentive & gregarious. Highly recommended (I'm a chef).Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your dining experience with us. We appreciate your wonderful feedback and will be sure to share your compliments with Silvia and the rest of our team. We hope you had a wonderful time in the Sacred Valley and look forward to your future visits. Saludos and safe travels!

Is a very cozy and warm place, because we have a wood-fired oven that serves to make the pizzas and some typical dishes of the area.We also have free WI FI.
If you're going to eat pizza in Ollantaytambo, you need to know beforehand that you won't be getting anything like deep dish or thick crust Chicago style pizza - far from it - but pretty much the exact opposite. So once you've accepted that razor thin pizza is the norm in Peru, this place was pretty good. Be sure to order a size up (XL instead of L, or L instead of M) to compensate for the lack of dough, or you will leave hungry. Most places don't put much sauce on their pizza either, so expect to get your flavor from the toppings - ham and pineapple in my case. Also, the young boy who was my server was very nice and A for his effort.

Not a very good meal and mediocre service. I had the trigo soup -- wheat, rice and meat -- that was tasty and OK. The Lomo Saltado, the staple of almost every Peruvian restaurant, was already lukewarm when served, while the rice was cold. There were more onions and peppers than there was meat. The lemonade that I ordered at the beginning was served after my meal, almost like a dessert. I and another couple were the only customers at that time. Not that good.

Our ruins guide recommended this place to my wife and two boys (13 and 11). Great space with lots of tables. They loved the chicken fajitas. My wife and I had âmenu of the dayâ that included awesome lemonade, amazing quinoa soup (huge), chicken thigh with soft potato and rice in a sauce and a brownie. Sooooooo good and great to have some local Peruvian food.

Just returned from an excellent meal tonight after a big day of touring Machu Picchu. The menu Del dia was terrific as we both had the carrot ginger creamed soup, I had the chicken and my wife had the vegetarian plate and a glass of wine and the bill was 52 soles. Includes a lemonade and chocolate brownie for dessert which rounded out the dining experience. Our waiter served everything on time and very personable so give the place a try as it is excellent value for the money and an enjoyable experience.
