Reviews on International food in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico. Gateway to Belize, Tikal in Guatemala and the numerous Río Bec ruins, Chetumal is the capital of Quintana Roo state. Buses connect major cities, including those in Belize. Rental cars cannot be taken through the Belize border. The busy city's old town boasts a Caribbean feel. The excellent, interactive Museo de la Cultura Maya offers fascinating insights to those planning to follow the dramatic Río Bec ruin route. The vine-strewn ruins are rich in wildlife and give the sense of stumbling onto a Lost World.
Things to do in Chetumal
Having thoroughly enjoyed the other alle carte restaurants at Bahia Principie Sian Kaan, husband and I picked this for our anniversary dinner.Sadly Alux lacks the atmosphere of the other restaurants on site and we missed the wonderful cheerful service we had experienced elsewhere. The food was average at best, though artistically presented and service was brusque. Our only less than positive experience at Sian Kaan.
Chetumal has a local brewery, and their "Obscura" beer is everywhere, but here you can snag some craft beer from Tulum including a Pale Ale and a Brown. So far, we haven't eaten here, but plan to while we stay here. The staff has been very nice to me, and I've just loved having a source for good beer while in town. When I overpaid by 100 pesos on accident, they made sure to correct it before I left, not always a common thing down here in the beautiful nation of Mexico. ;P
After some great leather shoe shopping, we couldn't help but notice a large red sign just across the street, 'Istanbul Kabob Restaurant'. Open to the street and noticing several smiling customers we're intrigued, but a little hesitant, as this is Mexico and not Istanbul. The owner greets us, she is very friendly and shows off her Chef credentials that she earned in Belize. The place is very clean, bright and busy with locals, so we decide to give it a try.My wife chose the chicken stuffed jalepeno peppers and the rest of us three had the beef gyros. Incredible!! Especially the peppers! The best we've had and the gyros were delicious too. We washed it all down with freshly made melon juice. We chose watermelon and our friends had the green melon juice. Light and a refreshing!!This is definitely going to be one of our favourite restaurants whenever we come to Chetumal.

The food was average, but the portion sizes were reasonable. However, the cocktails were very good value, the equivalent of around £2 each, which was excellent. It's a convenient location and was easy walking distance from our hotel. We wouldn't rave about it, but it was okay.
The Conchas melt in your mouth with a burst of wonderful goodness. Best breakfast of the week. We so enjoyed our meals.

Did anyone have their credit card skimmed here on February 14th? Server named Alma. Everything was great except when they took the card and disappeared. Our CC now compromised.

We went there this evening after finding Almina had positive reviews on TripAdvisor. It was really fabulous and very cheap. I had Oriental noodles which had a lovely flavour (the âIndian nutsâ turned out to be cashews) and my husband had the tuna tostadas (a cold dish with avocados and tuna). This came to £15 (including a bottle of beer , a bottle of water and a 15% tip which we included). The waiter was good too. Definitely recommend!!
