I have mixed feelings and not sure how to completely review this restaurant. I popped in to book a table and Thandi was very pleasant and helpful, dressed in a white "chef's coat" as all the staff are, so felt like a good omen. When we did arrive the room was cosy with a fire blazing and we found corner table for 2, menus brought promptly, wine serviced promptly and food served promptly and correctly.
The menu is mainly tapas - a really great idea as I love to be able to try different flavours at each meal. Other options for main and desserts are limited. My starter of a chorizo frittata was delicious. I then ordered a tapas of lamb meatballs in aubergine - could have been more flavour in the meat, the meatballs themselves were dry, and the tomato sauce was cold (off-putting with a hot dish). I also ordered a haloumi caprese - delicious, but presentation was as slab of haloumi that looked a bit congealed, with slices of tomato and fresh basil pesto - it just did not look up to standard. R had sardines to start and loved them, and his fillet main was cooked to perfection and a very healthy portion - he did not go hungry and we had to take half home!
R ordered the black forest cake, and was disappointed as not as good as his previous real German experiences. I had the Greek biscuits with tea later in the afternoon - my sense that they were a bit stale, past their sell-by date, even if the portion is generous and you could have one serving for 2 over afternoon tea/coffee. I loved the gorgeous chinese teapot used for serving the green tea!
The decor is eclectic - a beautiful old building with art and objet d'art all around you. There are 2 rooms for the restaurant and both have fires for those cold winter days/evenings. You can sit in the garden if it’s a lovely day (it was winter when we visited, but the garden has the making of a fine summer spot).
The staff and owners are friendly and we did not have to wait. Reasonably priced. I'm just in 2 minds about my overall review of this place. I would visit again, but don't expect Michelin style, this is a small town - however you won’t go hungry and the food was delicious. When it’s a busy weekend in Wakkerstroom, I really suggest booking, and perhaps out of ordinary hours, as my sense is if busy, you may have to wait – but remember this is the country, and everything just SLOWS down.

People in this tiny town love living the country life. Their friendliness spills over to visitors, even waitresses bubble with joy. Our smiling waitress didn’t know whether they had my favorite tipple, Klipdrift brandy, and when I questioned her basic lack of restaurant knowledge she informed me she was “just helping out.” What’s your day job, I asked? She smiled. “I’m a medical doctor specializing in nuclear medicine.” Bistro is in an art gallery, our food was great, two delicious filet steaks each, excellent wine, and the price altogether very reasonable. Hooray for Bistro!”

Old World Pub restaurant serving freshly prepared, sourced mainly local food. Friendly atmosphere . The best.
We often detour to Wakkerstroom on route to Ponta do Ouro just to visit The Owl & Hare. A quaint little pub in a little town full of friendly people. Nicely prepared pub and snack food perfect for a break when road tripping. Be on the lookout for the lovely couple who own the pub and resturant, always willing to tell you a story over a glass, or two, of wine.

Excellent coffee and eats; we've been there a number of times since moving to Wakkerstroom in mid-March. Always a comfortable vibe, and the fire place can come in useful at any time of the year. We miss them when they're closed on Tuesday and Wednesdays!
They're now starting to offer evening meals too, which will be popular.

This warm and inviting bakery is run by two very friendly and helpful ladies. There is a variety of delicious snack and light meal options. Their pies in particular are amazing.

Country Pub & Grub, Biker Friendly and Child Friendly. Big screen and TVs for all your sports needs. Friendly and Homely vibe
Initially we went for Sunday lunch but were told that the place was reserved for the locals who would be having a braai. We had a drink and left and went down the road to another restaurant. the following week we tried again on a Saturday and had a typical pub lunch which was OK. We sat outside but it was like being in a Farmyard. We wont be back in a hurry.
