Where to Eat in Wairoa: The Best Restaurants and Bars

March 8, 2018 Timmy Ribble

Wairoa is a town and territorial authority district in New Zealand's North Island. The town is the northernmost in the Hawke's Bay region, and is located on the northern shore of Hawke Bay at the mouth of the Wairoa River and to the west of Mahia Peninsula. It is 118 kilometres northeast of Napier, and 92 kilometres southwest of Gisborne. It is the largest town in the district of Wairoa. The district has been known historically as 'Te Wairoa'. In keeping with the district's vision of being bilingual by 2040, the use of the phrase 'Te Wairoa' when referring to the district is steadily increasing.

Cafe Jafa

We stopped at the JAFA cafe in Wairoa for a coffee and panini. What a mistake! Rude service (the Manager shouted at me when I asked why my coffee had been sitting on the counter for 10 minutes) and half an hour to deliver a toasted Panini!
Even one of the locals came over and sympathised. I just said 'don't worry - I know a website where his cafe will be reviewed!'
Long live the power of the Internet!

We had lunch in this great cafe while cycle touring through Wairoa. A great selection of modern food at a reasonable price plus great staff. This is an excellent combination.

Cafe 287

Reviewed By BPGY - Napier, New Zealand

I frequently stop at Cafe 287 for coffee on my business trips between Hawkes Bay and Gisborne. The coffee and food are great and the restrooms spotlessly clean. My only complaint is that the young waiters really need a bit of training in how to appear hospitable. No greeting, no smile and no thanks gave me the impression that serving me was a hassle. One notable exception was the young woman who brought me my breakfast, who did smile and seemed pleased to be of service.
Apart from this, it is a good cafe and worth the stop.

Oslers Bakery and Cafe

Reviewed By GlinysW - oxford

This a traditional bakery with a cafe attached. The walls are full of pictures showing the history of the bakery. It was a memory lane experience reminding me of the 1950s when i was but a lass. We called for brunch on new years day.
Food was uncomplicated and satisfying. I had a mound of bacon with my scrambled egg and the full breakfast was pronounced excellent by my companions. The service was friendly and efficient and the cafe was busy with locals- not so many visitors- but we still felt valued as customers. Coffee ok. Not great. I am fussy.
We bought a steak and mushroom pie and a box of scrummy cakes- the pie was the best I can remember tasting -chunky meat, moist and savoury. We heated it for lunch the next day and we made short work of the cakes too.

A truck had rolled earlier that morning, so traffic was closed until 1pm. We turned back and ate lunch here. Scallops were frozen/commercially crumbed, so there was more crumb coating than scallops. My fault for not twigging the sort of place it is. Toilets clean, and staff very nice. Thai beef salad was tasty, and the banana split excellent - thank you!

Arrived early morning
Wanted to use bathroom and order coffee and toastie.
Was told bathroom key lost and no access! Must be a BS story just not wanting to let travellers use their bathroom. Walked out and straight next door to Oslers where I used the bathroom and got a great coffee and toasties for my children! Don't stop at Richies! Just go next door!

Fantastic food with great kiwi service from local people!
The burger was on par with Queenstown's Fergburger, in my humble opinion (a restaurant I was first told about by an Irishman living in London)!
Since I drove into town from the local motel, the friendly girls at the bar even offered to give me a ride home if I wanted another few drinks (part of the restaurant's service) - where do you get that these days!
