Our restaurant experience in Vila Real is limited to Bons Tempos and Terra de Montanha.
Bons Tempos wins regarding the food. Especially remarkable are starters and desserts. Main course was a bit too ordinary but good wine compensated all.
Highly recommended.
Please, realize - it is only provisional town and nothing sophisticated expected.

We went all the way to Vila Real just to eat here as we got it recommended. It was a Tuesday late evening and we had a baby. It was quiet which helped a lot the case. The food was delicious. We had the prawn with risotto and grilled fish. The staff was very nice. Worth the 40km in panoramic and curved roads to have dinner.

Chaxoila Casa de Pasto lets you experience the regional specialities with great local produce, in a relaxed and cared for atmosphere. Visit us during summer and enjoy the Terrace! Or meet us in winter and have a tasty meal in the glass room.
Having visited this eatery each Summer over the past 4 to 5 years it has now gone downhill in no small measure in the food and wine dept. Firstly, one could always get all dishes on a medium or full basis ( 1/2 or full dose ) but sadly no longer. I had the typical tripe and beans Portuguese style which was as good as ever.
However, it is in the seafood area that the choice is lacking. Always used to have chiperones and calamari but these no longer figure on the menu; only Octopus ! Then the only fish on the menu was sea bass which my wife had; OK, but that is about it as it came with 6 potatoes, 3 small and 3 large. Not exactly exciting.
Asked for the wine list and was handed a scrappy dog eared list full of crosses next to almost every entry on the list meaning it was unavailable. So had to settle for a jug of white house wine which was not bad.
Chaxoila has slipped from #1 on the Trip Advisor list to #2; I believe that it will shortly fall further if this is what they are now dishing up as a first class restaurant.

We promised our daughter Italian food on her birthday and are very surprised that Donatello was not yet registered at TripAdvisor. The steward was very forthcoming, especially and not uncommon in Portugal, to the kids. More important, the food was superb and against a very acceptable price.
When in Vila Real, don't miss Donatello!

This was a party of eleven and we all enjoyed an excellent meal and friendly service.Portions were generous and the speciality was codfish. We should have realised but it was probably best to share starters.Located in a quiet area this would be ideal for business or pleasure.

Jantar Apenas Mediante Reserva. Dinner Only By Reservation. Dîner Seulement Sur Reservation.
This little gem is nothing to look at from the outside but it offers great Portuguese platters. The main floor is a little gift shop offering souvenirs and a very good variety of wine and port. The restaurant is upstairs where you will be met...MoreObrigado pelo vosso comentário

If you are in Vila Real, you cannot miss Casa Lapão! It is small and cozy, with the very best Portuguese traditional sweets. Break your tour for a little while and taste these delicious sweets, all made out of sugar, eggs and love: "Cristas de Galo" (the most famous and traditional sweet of Vila Real - with almonds), "Pitos de Santa Luzia" (with pumpkin and cinnamon), "Tijelinhas de Laranja" (with oranges), "Antoninhos" (also with pumpkin), and many many others, Order a double expresso coffee and get ready to continue your visit! And don't forget that you can always order some sweets to take along - they are excellent for unforgettable night bites. Bon Appétit!

This is a good eatery a few meters from the Town Hall. They offer unpretentious food at very good prices. Wonderful thin dough pizzas and also Portuguese dishes and snacks. Young and informal atmosphere. Fast and friendly service. Good option if you´re visiting the town but don´t want a formal lunch.
