For nearly 35 years we have been rambling around France leaning heavily on the Michelin Red Guide. Gaining a Michelin Star is a great achievement for a chef and his/her staff-even more so in France. We have found the guide often more reliable than our GPS. But today there are many other sources of guidance, including Tripadvisor.
This is a rather long winded way of saying Roscanvec is certainly an enjoyable restaurant. But all stars don't shine equally as bright. Their individuality is what captures the toque. Roscanvec certainly displays a powerful enthusiasm and congeniality which is very evident in the service staff.
There are some minor annoyances, Why place a bottle of white wine some 5 or 6 meters from the table and only putting it in ice half way through the service? The team approach works on a busy night, but is somewhat of a merry go round.
One of the tasting menus was characterized by beautiful ingredients forming culinary works of art. Tasty, but a bit academic. Of course, this is formal dining, and one expects something of a show. Still, it seemed very good but not transcendent.
Who am I to judge a very talented chef? All in all, a very nice experience, but a somewhat overpriced wine list and a limited menu places this in the very good but not excellent category for us.

Ate here after a long trip to Vannes with my husband and toddler. Couldn't fault the food, it was delicious. The staff was lovely and very accommodating however service was painfully slow. We waited about 40 minutes for our starters and another half an hour for our main courses. If you are not pushed for time then this place is great, however if on a rush then it might be best to leave for another night

There are not so much adress in Vannes now for a good meal and not to expensive.
La Source is now a knowed (and for good reasons...) spot.
Ther are two rooms and try to get a table at the superior floor.
There is a nice menu but also some daily suggestions.
The Fish is very good and the desserts are often original.
Very good choice of original wines.

Probably the best service in Vannes, and there are lots of little touches with lift this restaurant slightly above the likes of Rive Gauche and Les Remparts; but of course, you'll also pay slightly more as well. Both my dishes, carpaccio of scallops with wasabi etc. and lambshank were very good without being outstanding. The brunette ordered a cep ravioli with parmesan to start and that was fabulous. For her main, she went for veal sweetbreabs, a very difficult dish to get right for any chef, and unfortunately, this was wasn't done right. Too nervy and a little too much blood. The foie gras sauce was also too rich for both our tastes.
But we've been to this restaurant a few times before and always left happy. The tables aren't on top of each other, which other restaurants in Vannes are certainly guilty of and everybody is professional and friendly. If you're trying to decide between Roscanvec and L'Eden, this place is better value.

Creperie
After spending six days in Vannes there are three crêperies that I would recommend without hesitation, and this is the second (but probably No.1 out of the three). The Seating area is quite large and bright, but booking is still advisable since this crêperie is very popular. The evening we were there a pre-booked party of 20 Americans arrived. Very pleasant staff, good varied menu and the service was quick. Savoury crêpes were moist and tasty, but the sweet crêpes were the most artistically presented I have ever seen. There were also some rather unusual, but tasty, ice-cream flavours (such as Breton biscuit). Highly recommended. Note: Closed on Monday & Tuesday.
The other two crêperies that I would recommend are Dan Ewen and Kalon Breiz.

Having been suspicious about this restaurant's meteoric rise to the top of Vannes' list (and there are a lot of one-time/two-time reviewers who join TA, do a five-star review, and then disappear), I couldn't wait to judge for myself.
We arrived for lunch pretty late (1.45pm) but we were accepted; which was decent of them. This is France, after all. Our waiter (Vincent Cassel) was very good - ready to explain, chatty but not overly so - and they have a nice bar where you can see them prepare everything. For, even at that late hour, all was prepared, from scratch, before our very eyes. You're right. Let's not get too excited, but, credit where it's due.
I had the menu Coeur de Sushi which was 18 pieces for 21.50 Euros and they were all competently made, if a little bland. Sushi is often bland, isn't it? There's only so much you can do with sticky rice and raw fish. Only once have I had really tasty sushi and that was in Boston. The Brunette ordered something which had Spicy Rolls in it and they were lovely. Perhaps something to do with the Philadelphia cheese in it. (Yes, Philadephia cheese doesn't sound very Japanese. Or any cheese for that matter. But it worked, so who cares.)
So, does it deserve its lofty position as the best restaurant in Vannes? Well, that depends on how much you like sushi, doesn't it?
For me, the answer is no. But it is a good sushi restaurant that knows what it's doing, and it's a very welcome change to the everything-the-same restaurant landscape that is Vannes.
Maybe I should open a Fish n' Chip shop...

Some friends had previously stumbled across this restaurant when visiting Vannes and we went with them to check it out. We had a very nice meal, sat outside in the garden, with not a tourist in sight (apart from us). Great food, great value and great service, Please try it!

Organic and local, that's a good start. But there is also some good cooking on offer here, plus inventiveness with ingredients, without being gourmet and tricksy. I was delighted to get a range of vegetables with my fish, not often the case in France, where cooks seem to ignore the produce in their local markets and stick to potatoes only. Very friendly service too. Hope they do well.
