■Where Italian Meets Incredible Shonai Ingredients

This Italian restaurant showed Japan that local regions such as Shonai, have incredible food hidden. Chef Okuda, who sources his ingredients daily from local producers with whom he has developed a close relationship with. Chef Okuda believes that simple cooking preparation best brings out the delicious flavors of the local ingredients. The ingredients decide the menu of the day. One day, yellowtail caught on Shonai beach becomes carpaccio. Shonai beef with locally gathered wild plants create beef tagliata the next day.

Above: The restaurant’s Specialty - Fritter with the local “Gassan” bamboo shoot rolled in cured ham.
The marriage of sweet bamboo and the salty ham results in an exceptional appetizer.
My husband and I visited Al Checciano recently and were very impressed. Reservations are a must here, so we made ours a week early. Unlike most Japanese restaurants, they asked about food allergies at the reservation time. As I have some minor allergies this was a very nice touch for me.
The food was amazing. We had a wonderful meal with the set menu. We had carpaccio, risotto, salad, and the pasta of our choice, plus local beef. Two types of dessert were brought to the table so my husband and I could taste a bit of each others. Coffee or herbal tea rounded out our meal. Many of the ingredients came from the local area so freshness is a given.
The service was generally good. The only negative thing about the evening was the drinks we were offered early on, weren't included in the meal, they were charged on top of the set price.
Dinner for two, excluding the extra drinks was reasonable for a special night out. A very nice meal.

Hyakken Bori is a very good restaurant on the Keio University grounds. It is a Japanese-style restaurant with lovely views, reasonable priced dishes and delicious Japanese food.
The staff is generally excellent and very helpful, although they don't speak much English. The menu is written mostly in kanji so go with a Japanese-reading friend if that is a problem for you. At the moment they have a very reasonable lunch special that costs less than ¥1000 including coffee or tea (but not dessert), as well as other dishes.
They often serve local dishes with a gourmet flare and they are very good. For holidays and special occasions they have quite reasonable special menus, not cheap, but good value for money. We took advantage of their Christmas special last year and it was excellent...a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach.
There is free parking available near the restaurant.

This sushi restaurant is extremely good.
The amount of fish on the rice is just unbelievable.
The taste of the fishes is also pretty good for a very reasonable price.
Would recommend if you have a car or if you take the bus to the "Shonai Kankobussankan" bus stop.

This fruit shop has a coffee shop upstairs serving fruit tarts and drinks. The modern white interior on three levels lend the cafe a bright atmosphere, even on a grey day. The fruit tarts are very good, with seasonal fruits however they only have a limited amount each day, both times i visited late afternoon I bought the last few slices. The tarts are light and pastry flakey with cream cheese, custard and cream variations. I choose burnt sugar and banana, there was also a very fancy slice of mango tart. A cake and drink set will set costs between 700 to 900 yen or so, depending on the fruit on the tart. An excellent place for a nice quiet afternnoon tea. Note, the coffee shop is upstairs and as is usual in Japan not to spacious so if you have luggwge i recommend you keace it at the starion if you cannot carry it up stairs easily.

Be aware! You may need to line up for hours - often hundreds of people at peak time. Unique hand-made flat noodle that holds over 50% water. Soup base is pork, chicken and fish, plus some flavor of dried squid. Not too salty, just right. Note it is likely closed as ramen restaurant between June and Sep. It operates only as a hotel during summer.
