Unique is the word that comes to mind. And, maybe, mysterious. Why would a chef of this caliber would be making food of this quality in the little town of Smithville, where most of Kansas City will never go?
My wife and I ended up at Justus Drugstore one rainy anniversary two years ago, after I'd first made a reservation at Webster House in downtown KC, where my wife took one look at the fusty old room we were seated in and said, "Really? This antique store is where we're going for our anniversary?" She looked like she might cry. I called The American, just a few blocks away, to see if we could get a table; we couldn't. It had begun to rain, so I wasn't really looking forward to a long drive anywhere, but I called Justus Drugstore. The woman on the phone was incredibly warm and accommodating, and when we got there, coming in from a torrential downpour nearly a half-hour later, she was just as welcoming in person. We instantly knew we were in the right place.
And it just kept getting righter. The wine list was great, as were the salads (mine had goat cheese in it, which is really all I remember), and the service impeccable. They brought us some kind of amuse bouche which I remember as a perfect bite—I have no idea what was in it. My wife is a vegetarian and asked if the chef could prepare something without meat (I don't think there was anything on the menu); they made her an excellent risotto. I had a roasted boar dish, which honestly I don't remember as well as I remember my wife's delight at the risotto. She's a superb cook herself and a very tough customer. It's rare that she really loves someone else's food (or her own—just a very picky eater).
For dessert, chocolate cake and an ice cream/sorbet selection, as I recall, all lovely. Again, this was two years ago (the automatic field here for "When did you visit?" doesn't go back that far). The only thing I'm absolutely certain of is that Justus Drugstore saved what could have been a disappointing anniversary, turning it into a rain-soaked adventure with an outstanding dinner at the heart of it. Everyone there genuinely seemed to care about us and wanted to us to have the best night we could have. That and the homey-yet-contemporary feel of the place, along with the food, made it one of the best dining-out experiences we've had in (well, just outside of) Kansas City.

Discover the best new spot in Smithville! Every Friday and Saturday Jeff and his family open the gallery at 7:30 a.m. for great coffee, pastries (sweet and savory) and conversation. A perfect way to start the day.

First time to visit this restaurant. Much larger and nicer inside that it looks from the highway! Great menu with fair prices! We were met at the front door and quickly escorted to our table. Service was friendly, helpful, and quick! Food was delicious and prepared exactly as ordered. Their meat is high quality! It is sourced locally and butchered by a local meat market! It looks like there is also a nice large banquet / special occasion room if you would ever need that for something as well! Fun atmosphere! All in all a great dining experience!! Looking forward all ready to my next dining experience there!!

Chop's BBQ is a restaurant in the historic downtown Smithville. Come join us for some top quality bbq. Our brisket and Butts are all slow smoked daily!
Excellent restaurant; Saturday lunch was quick with tasty pulled pork and brisket sandwiches. The cheesy bacon potatoes and seasoned French fries were excellent. First time I did not use ketchup on my fries. A bright and clean building in downtown across from the event square and with very friendly staff.

This our "go to" restaurant. We visit almost once a week. The owners and staff have been consistent for many years and it has become a town favorite. Great variety of food and great service, all at a great value. If you like Mexican, it is worth a visit.

Food is fresh, made to order, & very good. Prices are reasonable especially their lunch specials.
My hubby goes there for lunch almost everyday as he works in Trimble, MO. He is very impressed with Kelli & Julie; are friendly & offer great service!
I meet him once a week for lunch & we almost always go to Kelli's Korner!
In addition to serving food, this place is a convenience store, gasoline station, & bait shop! The place is very clean & it's a fun place to see friends, too!
This place has changed owners & is now named Kelli's Korner!

Drive in restaurants are rare. Sitting in the car with my grand children eating hamburgers and corn dogs with cherry limeades is a summer memory I hope they never forget. The Smithville Sonic is a clean, fast, and friendly drive-in. Close to the lake and easy to locate. Have fun!

We had friends host a dinner of this place which they have been to at least five times. They said it is the nearest taste of New Orleans (Nawlins) cooking they have tasted. we started with appetizers: Deviled eggs ($7) and Boudin Balls ($7) along with a Watermelon Margarita for me ($7). It was a good way to start off the meal. Several of us ordered classic cajun meals. For me it was Red beans and Rice ($15), another in our party did the Jambalaya ($15). Other items folks ordered was Brick Hen (chicken dish - $15), Pasta dish, which my friend reported was filled with meat unlike other places where you were lucky to find one or two pieces of meat. The dishes are choc full of flavors and they don't skimp on the portions. Service was good and we had a wonderful time. FYI the restaurant name is Soiree. It is misspelled on Tripadvisor web site.
