Savannakhet, officially named Kaysone Phomvihane (Lao: ໄກສອນ ພົມວິຫານ; Thai: ไกสอน พมวิหาน) and previously known as Khanthabouli (ຄັນທະບູລີ), is a city in western Laos and the capital of the Savannakhet Province. With a population of 120,000 (undated), it is the second-largest city in Laos, after Vientiane. The city is the birthplace of Kaysone Phomvihane, the first leader of Laos from independence in 1975 to 1992, and was named after him in 2005. Although the old French colonial quarter of the town, along the Mekong River-front, is depressed and crumbling, the town's proximity to Thailand's booming economy has brought about new commercial development in the northern part of the town, near both the river crossing and the bus terminal.

This restaurant which is built on the water is not cheap like the stalls on the bank of the river, but well worth it. The service is excellent and considered one of the better restaurants in town. the restaurant had quite a few customers for lunch and I was the only foreigner. The tables around me were filled with groups of what appeared to be civil servants and wealthy local families. The food was very good, but more expensive than similar restaurants in Thailand and quite bit more expensive than the food stall on the nearby river bank. I would go back again though because it was a very pleasant place to eat and spend some time.

Lin Cafe has relocated 150 m to the east, facing the Talat Yen Plaza or Night Market.
I read on Trip Advisor about the review but found myself other places and being disappointed. Purposely came here for lunch and WOW, very happy I did. Clean, good service, great food, good size servings. There isn’t a thing that disappointed me. Highly recommend especially if your a foreigner, you’ll be in good hands.

The location is amazing, being the center of lovely square in town.
The food is really autenthic and delicious, served in a traditional way, which means with soup and banana added to what your order. The prices are low and the lady is very nice and friendly.

Lin's was closed Christmas Day so the tuk-tuk driver stopped here. I had tuna on a baguette. The bread was toasted and was very nice but there wasn't much tuna.

The restaurant is centrally located on the Cathedral square in a French colonial style building. In my opinion by far the best restaurant in Savannakhet and the only one with table cloth, bread and butter, amuse bouche, etc... The menu features traditional French fare. A little bit expensive by Savannakhet standards, but still very affordable. A 3 courses lunch set around 8$.

As you pass by the lake on the way to and back from the stupa That Ing Hang, you will see several waterfront beer halls/restaurants. This restaurant is the last one you would see if you drive/ride from Savannakhet town (or the first one if you come from the stupa).
We chose this restaurant among other competitors as the conditions looked better and it looked popular among locals.
We liked the ambience very much. We sat on the floor (pillows available) of the waterfront area and enjoyed the view. Each group gets a hut (look like a sunbed) and I found it romantic.
We were very pleased to have stopped at this place on the way back to town. We had drinks and a bag of crisps only but they seem to offer a variety of local food.
If you are visiting the stupa, we highly recommend you to stop at this place for a drink.
