Things to do in Sainte Marie

Traditional creole meal, beautiful plates served in front of the sea. Octopus, or conch meat, crayfish, lobster or mahi mahi on the grill. Big parking, kept garden Open every days for lunch, and FRIDAY NIGHT FOR DINNER !
This restaurant is not in town, but on the road above shore so you need to look for it, else it will be difficult to turn in time on the car park. The venus is pleasant and green, with a view on the atlantic from the Terrace. Light wind and Water sprayers ensure a cool temperature. Food and service are good and not overpriced at all (as mentioned in my outdated guide). I recommend (and will personally come back).

Returned again to this distillery and, happily, the tour bus left shortly thereafter so the experience improved dramatically. Lots of history and things to see. The nearby restaurant which hosts a Sunday buffet and dance was EMPTY so decided to not return for this soiree.

Stopped by for lunch on a sunday. First guest, but the restaurant filled upp quickly. Had live music and people danced ate and danced again. Very nice and genuine feeling.
We had crevettes creole, todays catch and entrecote. All of us very pleased with our dishes. Home made sorbet, made with fresh fruit from the garden, was outstanding. Would have gone back if we had stayed in the area

It's a pretty winding drive to this place, and it's set well back from the road, so keep your eyes peeled.
It's a big place inside, obviously geared for big crowds and music. The food is is hearty and decent,
and the view from the window seats is pretty spectacular.

Le Ti Punch Coco is a good eating option for lunch are dinner. Although there are other places around, this is a good choice.

This restaurant, attached to the St James Distillery, did not live up to its sales pitch (e.g this is the best restaurant in Ste Marie and you might have to reserve a table....) in any way. We arrived for lunch at about 1pm and only one other table was occupied. It must be said from the outset that the location leaves much to be desired, backing onto a warehouse shed and the entrance to a grocery store loading dock. Our welcome was pleasant enough and we asked if they understood English because our French is poor and the waitress assured us that she would try. I agreed to do the same --- No1 rule; You're in a French speaking country; at least try your French!
We were shown to a corner table overlooking the car park, toilet block and entrance from the street complete with industrial sized waste bin. Things were not looking good.
We were shown a menu and decided to try the 'suggestion du jour' at 18 Euros, although there was no written description of what was on offer, simply entree, main course and dessert. The young man who came to take our order was surly and unhelpful, made no effort to explain the menu or get the waitress who had originally welcomed us to assist. However, on the basis that everything is an adventure we persevered. We had understood that the main course was fish as was the entree followed by fruit sorbet, although I was unsure because two fish based courses is unusual.
The entree was a small, spicey fish tart served with salad - an unusual but not unpleasant taste although it might be considered too spicey as an entree.
When he came to clear away the plates the surly young waiter motioned to us to keep our knife & fork for the next course!!!
The main course was indeed a second fish course. A nondescript, tasteless fish steak (tuna?) covered in a tomato sauce served with a sweet banana mousse, a slice of breadfruit(?) and a beans/carrots mix not long out of the deep freeze. We struggled with this eclectic mix and ate barely half. The pleasant waitress seemed disappointed that we had not eaten more but we explained, honestly, that it was not to our taste.
The dessert was guava sorbet. Two scoops decorated with a leaf and served in a plastic bowl. It tasted fine.
Twice we were asked if we wanted coffee which we declined but when we went to pay our surly waiter said we had. I assured him we had not.
I did not leave a tip!
In short this visit was memorable for all the wrong reasons including the arrival of a young couple who seated themselves two tables from us and insisted in 'making-out'. I was surprised that the staff allowed this behaviour to continue.

We just happened on this place while wondering around the island. Everything was exactly as expected. Typical slower service as is in most of the island with traditional offerings. Nothing special here, but I wasn't looking for anything special either.

We stopped here for lunch after touring the museum and the grounds. I highly recommend eating here for some good Creole cuisine if you make the trip out to the museum - the food was fantastic. We started the meal with banana-themed cocktails - I had the banana daiquiri (which was like having dessert before the meal)! My meal was fantastic - river shrimp (called Ouassous) with a picante sauce, rice, and of course, fried bananas.

restaurant, lounge bar, ice. near the Tombolo
Bravo Chef Brédas, on reviendra.
