The restaurant is located just a few meters from the seaside and is more or less family driven. I visited the restaurant this autumn which very much is off season. They offer a limited menu. I had the halibut which was tasty and well prepared. They also offer some wines and a bar service. If you go for a bigger selection, you have to go to Kast Loss next door.

The venue is completely renovated and very stylish. I almost prefer this as a café than a bar. The glass Terrace is a good solution to Risør's colder nights. Unfortunately they can be a bit too strict. My 18-year-old friend was asked to leave when a random woman with a cocktail came and sat with us. Everyone else got to stay, but because he could "potentially" take a sip from (the Stanger's) drink, then he had to leave. That was my one bad experience, but otherwise a fun place to hang out and a good atmosphere.

The Fiskemottak sells fish, excellent and fresh, for, in my view, reasonable prices. They have a nice terras outside where you can order a few things. Fresh shrimps or
mussels, fishsoup, fiskekaker, sometimes they have ceviche, bacalao, shrimpsandwiches. Accompanied with potato salad or bread and aioli. It may not be an extensive menu, but everything is excellent, fresh and tastes wonderful. They also serve good wine and are so nice as to really fill the glasses. In my opinion it is the best restaurant in town. Unfortunately they have only lunch otherwise we would go there twice a day. By the way the service is very friendly!

You cannot miss one of Norway's popular chamber music festivals falls often on late June in Risør. The Saturday concert at "Island Stangholmen" is one of the highlights of the festival. It takes 10-15 minuttes by boat from Risør to arrive Stangholmen. Concert tickets include the boat trip as well. Restaurant at Stangholmen offer nice food but it may take some time probably because of the festival. There are musicians practicing before the concert.Tunes from harp, Beethovan's "Moonlight sonata" from Grand piano and clarinet which will embrace you tenderly. You will definitely experience a fairy tale in the small Island Stangholmen if you visit the Saturday concert.

Whenever we go to Risor, which is almost every year, we make sure that we have at least one meal at Kast Loss.
Yesterday was our second visit on this trip and won't be our last.
There are many tempting items to choose from.
We are most impressed by their seafood items. The creamy seafood soup is wonderful and so is the shrimp Sandwich on the lunch menu.
A small, but good, selection of wines and beers and the ability to sit right on the water on their summer add on called Pir 1, makes it a great place to relax, eat and watch the boats go by
Pizzas are also very good here and a reasonable choice for two.
This is Norway, so nothing is cheap by North American standards, but the quality is high, the service is good and the ambiance is superb, outside on Pir 1 or inside in their nautical themed restaurant.

During the summer it is always full to the brim with visitors. However, I would advocate a little patience and wait for a table facing the harbor. To really get the taste of summer, try the blue mussels, they are delicious. There are of course other good items on the menu as well, but the mussels are for me the embodiment of summer in Risor. My grandchildren on the other hand raved about the pizza's.

Not technically a food place although you can order pizza from the Stranden.
This is a British (actually a Scottish) type pub with some very interesting beers on tap as well as large selections of aquavit and Scotch whiskey.
Very friendly with fast free Wi-Fi.. a good place to hang out and meet the locals.

We visited China Palace to have dinner, and it was a great place to dine. The restaurant localities are not so special, one big room with rather ordinary interior, but it was clean, smelled good and the chairs were comfortable.
The menu was small, but a bit different from the most of this kind of restaurants. One thing that we noticed, was that they served food with different Chinese styles. Another that the menu itself was not so huge, but contained well chosen dishes.
You could also get Norwegian food there, but we did not try any of that.
We ordered Spring Rolls for starters, and noticed that it took a while before the food was served. When it came, it was well worth the waiting - because the food was made there and then - and the spring rolls were extremely crispy, containing both meat and vegetables. Really good, and we had big hopes for the main dishes.
My wife and I ordered both beef, even though in different styles. Personally I chose a Sichuan dish, and my wife a dish with lots of black peppers.
The sauces were both home made - and not (as in most of these restaurants in Norway) ready made, bought in a shop. And they were delicious and really tasty.
The vegetables were correctly cooked as well. They were cooked - but had still a bit crispiness left to chew on.
For dessert we ordered ice, I chose one with warm blackberries.
It's 98 kilometers from Porsgrunn to Risør, but we will drive that tour every once in a while to eat a dinner here. It's worth the trip.
The restaurant can also be used for users of wheel chairs.

Not bad pastries. Not great pastries. Just pastries. It was a handy, pleasant place for a brief stop.

Three of us went to 'Sorlandsporten for lunch. The menu was a small one with burgers, sandwiches and a couple of daily features. All three of us had the same featured item, the Schnitzel with salad and potatoes.
Now, I just love Norwegian potatoes, their colour and texture. These were super, even the salad was a winner. The Schnitzel was a nice sized pork cutlet cooked perfectly. Yum yum.
Like most places in Norway, it wasn't cheap, but it was good and filling and satisfying.
If in the area, try this cafe.
