Being from Arizona on our second week of travel, this was a most pleasant surprise. We were really missing Mexican food when we found this little gem.
The food was excellent, the service even better. This is a family run establishment and it was obvious that the owners take pride in their business, and that locals consider this a favorite.

The steak was excellent; the side dishes mundane. Dirty entrance was not appealing, and interior décor apparently hadn't been updated in 50 years. Locals at the bar looked us up and down when we entered - that was funny. So close your eyes, eat your steak, and you'll enjoy this place.

Small, dirty, crowded diner. Slow service. Two of us ordered the shrimp basket and the other ordered chicken strips. Shrimp baskets came out first. There were a good number of shrimp (13) but they were way overcooked. We were about halfway through and still no sign of the chicken strips. They came up and sat on the counter while the waitress rang up 5 customers. Finally had to ask the guy bussing tables if he could get them delivered to us. Of course, they were none too hot by the time they arrived. We were not the only table with a timing problem as the table next to us had two customers who got their food while the third guy had to wait 15 minutes more for his burger. Don't think we'll be back.

Early evening dinner with drinks, blended margarita was good. Shrimp basket with fries was hot and tasty, breaded cauliflower was good. I had the 50/50 burger that was a cheeseburger with bacon pieces in side, it was good but would rather have a double cheeseburger with crisp bacon. Good little dive bar with food.

I'll start with Great Food. The restaurant opened a few months ago but this was our first visit. Friday night 6pm---kinda busy. When you step in, the menu is right on the wall and you place your order there. We were a bit confused at first, as we thought we would be seated then place an order. Once we understood the flow of the line, it was easy enough. Family of 6 ( 2 adults and kids 6 9 12 18) ate dinner. price was $55, so about $10 per person. The food was wonderful...we left full and not one kid or adult had food left on the plate. I ate a Non-Typical Buck which was a beef patty with pulled pork and Mozzarella sticks on top. I added BBQ, and it was great. Gladly will return soon I'm guessing.

Red Coach Restaurant

Reviewed By 730jane - Iowa City, Iowa

I first came to the Red Coach for dinner two years ago. I had a mediocre chicken salad in the nearly empty restaurant and was pretty disappointed until I overheard the waitress say that they had a freshly made coconut cream pie. Who could resist that? I had a slice of the very best (and biggest) coconut cream pie I have ever had for a whopping $3.00. I have been back twice and it is just as wonderful as always, although not as large this time. I would definitely recommend stopping in for pie if you are passing through Red Oak on Hwy 34.
