Where to Eat in Puno: The Best Restaurants and Bars

January 24, 2018 Leonarda Pillsbury

Llamas, sheep and alpacas roam the plains of Puno, a port city in southeastern Peru. Their fleeces are used to make the area’s signature textiles, which make excellent souvenirs. You’ll do a lot of walking here, as many of the streets are too steep for cars. But the climbs are worth it for the excellent views of Lake Titicaca. Take a boat to the Floating Islands or get up close and personal with the four-legged locals at a llama farm.

My group guide suggested this restaurant, after seeing the four star review we decided to give it a go. We had a decent size group, 14 in total and were one of the first big groups to arrive this evening. I'll keep this simple:
Food: 4/5 Tasty Oriental Chicken with a Margarita pizza. Best pizza I've had in Peru so far.
Staff: Very courteous and nice however seemed a little lost when our orders were ready. Our waiter seemed overwhelmed and the service was slow. 30 minutes for drinks, over an hour for appetizers to arrive which came out with main dishes is just unacceptable. I believe this to be a management issue and the restaurant may want to look into kitchen flow.
Price: majority of the prices seemed fair however I do belive it to be a little more expensive than other places. Fix the service and I do believe these prices fall in line will fellow restaurants in the area however Cusco is about 6 soles cheaper on everything.
Final note: The slow service and confused waiter killed the groups evening, this is why I have three stars.

We were staying at this hotel so, although we don’t usually take dinner at the hotels we stay at – because they usually are not very good – we decided at the end of a long day to give this one a try.
We made the reservation at breakfast and chose our table. When we arrived to claim it, our reservation was denied yet there was a ‘reserved’ notice on the table. We discussed this with the waiter and took the table.
The table was laid for two, but had only one napkin – and it was damp. The waiter then brought a replacement, plus one more. They were both damp.
For starters we ordered a grilled vegetable dish and a carpaccio of alpaca. The vegetables and the carpaccio were very good, but there was a cheese ‘basket’ over the carpaccio and it was inedible: very tough and chewy: probably it had been prepared a long time before and left out. I mentioned this to the waiter.
The main courses we ordered were chicken stew and trout papillote.
The chicken stew came with rice that was cold. The stew itself was barely warm. I complained to the waiter and the head waiter came to apologise and to ask me to order a replacement for which I would not be charged. I ordered the chicken with peanut sauce and this was a little too salty for my taste, but level of salt is just a matter of taste, I guess. My wife’s trout was not as hot as it should be. When you cut through the papillote you should get a cloud of steam, but there was none.
I also ordered a pisco sour.
When the bill came it was predictably incorrect. The wrong price had been used for the pisco sour. The reason for this was that I had ordered it from the food menu, but I noted that the price was different on the drinks menu.
I HAD been charged for the defective chicken stew, so I called the waiter and he said he would amend it. He brought a new bill, which was so faint as to be illegible.
At this point I called the head waiter again and pointed out that there had been six errors in the meal and that this was an error rate beyond my experience.
He apologized profusely and said that the bill would be reduced by a further 20%.
So, on the one hand they attended promptly to all of our complaints/ observations, which was good, but then there should just not have been so many.
I think that we will revert to our usual practice of not eating in hotel restaurants…..

The owner of our hotel said that it was a great choice, which reinforced my decision after Reading all the previous reviews. It had been a long, cold and tiring day, after a trip to the Islands, and I was hungry. The wood fired oven at the entrance set off a wave of welcoming heat and aroma as we entered.
My husband and I ordered a personal del Buho and a medium vegetariana. The garlic sauce and pimiento sauce that accompanied the pizzas were finger-licking delicious, as were the pizzas themselves. Prices were very reasonable, cheaper than anything else we've eaten (at sit-down places) in Peru, and the food was A+

We had the set menu including desert and a bottle of red. All up S130 for 2.
The chocolate desert was the best part. Their red wine selection is limited.
Both alpaca and pork dishes were slices of meat cooked well but better for a lunch rather than dinner service. The accompanying potato was dry.
The quinoa soup had little to no veggies in it but still ok.
The ambience is great for a group or couple and the service quick.

We stay two days at the Libertador Hotel at Lake Titicaca and we're fortunate enough to eat two dinners and to breakfast at the lovely restaurant in the hotel. We need to give a shout out to two gentlemen who gave us exceptional service. Hugo was not only friendly but very professional and his great service the first night convinced us to stay and have supper the second night at this hotel. The second evening we had Daniel as our waiter who was also very professional and when I left my camera at dinner, he delivered it personally to our room. Both of these gentlemen are an asset to the restaurant. With great food and great service I highly recommend Los Uros.

We saw this place strolling down lima street and then came back for lunch seeing their pizza oven.
Clean place, lots of tables, not to busy ,good service and offering a variety of menu selections. We ordered pizza and their Andean chicken..the chicken was good, plenty and with fries...the pizza was had very thin crust and was tasteless .
I came back alone for dinner wanting to try a dish that would be the same that I saw at the San Pedro Market in Cusco but it was not to be.
At nigh they had local musicians adding to the experience . Inexpensive place making it for good value on what you are getting but i would stick to the local fare and not the pizza.
