Had to write this place up... real cool. They grow and roast their own coffee at the Hawaiian Moonbeans Cafe (part of the Kahuku Country market). The espresso bar makes all the regular types of coffee drinks and their cups of coffee are amazing in taste and price. I stumbled of the cafe since I stopped there for the areas cheapest gas. Its a great funky family owned rest stop between kona and Hilo or Volcano.

Great food - takes a bit to get it, but worth the wait. Kinda pricy but so is Hawaii. Serving size is medium to large, prices are approx $10+/person

Ka-Lae Garden is a family owned and operated Farm, Fruit Stand, and Thai Food Restaurant located in the Ocean View, Ranchos, area of Kau on the Big Island of Hawaii.
We stopped here for lunch during our drive from Volcano to Hilo. It is a good midway point. Bathrooms were also very clean and nice. There are two single occupant bathrooms. You can walk around the produce gardens while you wait for your food to be cooked. It's a very pleasant and relaxing atmosphere with lovely ocean views.
Food is delicious and authentic! A nice surprise to find out in the middle of nowhere on the Big Island. It is very informal - some might say dinky. There is just one medium sized room with an ordering counter, help yourself utensils/water and open shelving with produce for sale. You order at the counter, grab your own utensils/water and seat yourselves at a table. The food will be brought out as it is made.
This appears to be a one family operation and when we went for late lunch, just one server at the counter and one lady in the kitchen. It is going to take a while, especially if you have a large order or there are more patrons in the restaurant than just your table. Dishes seem to be cooked one at a time. Knowing the family setting, this was fine by me. It is not a high activity, professional restaurant with prep chefs and kitchen assistants.

Vegan and gluten free options!!!!!! It tastes real good too!!! I only have great things to say about this place... Lots of vegan baked goods, V GF tasty pizza and V GF calzones, vegan meatballs!!!!! They use Daiya Cheese and have a killer GF crust. Order ahead and they keep it piping hot! Super consistent! So glad this place is in OV, well worth the trip for me & friends.

Ocean view is a sleepy town with small services and easily passed by. There are no remarkable memories that we have other than the giant cookies that they make at this pizzeria. They come in the typical flavors like chocolate chip , Mac nut, oatmeal. And lately mango. Lately we have been stocking up a small box of these goodies to bring back home. Enjoy

I had purchased two loaves of bread previously on our Big Island trip before stumbling on the actual bakery. Apparently, most of the bread in the groceries stores is baked here. This visit though was for some delicious pastries. The place can be pretty busy at times as tour buses stop here. There are various places outdoors to enjoy your purchase. Fresh salads and sandwiches are available, so this makes for an all around great food stop. There is also a nice selection of those trinkets you want to take home. Clean place, good food, friendly workers make this a 5 star stop.

Small place where orders back up quickly. Gravy for the loco moco is thin, watery and flavorless. If you're in Ocean View and jonesing for local food, it's your only choice.
