Newark-on-Trent or Newark /ˈnjuːək/ is a market town and civil parish in the Newark and Sherwood district of the county of Nottinghamshire, in the East Midlands of England. It stands on the River Trent, the A1 (on the route of the ancient Great North Road), and the East Coast Main Line railway. The origins of the town are possibly Roman, as it lies on an important Roman road, the Fosse Way. The town grew around Newark Castle, now ruined, and a large market place, now lined with historic buildings. It was a centre for the wool and cloth trades. In the English Civil War, it was besieged by Parliamentary forces and had to be relieved by Prince Rupert in a battle known as the Relief of Newark.

We had a cooked lunch at Gannets this week whilst visiting Newark and were disappointed to find that the quality of food experienced at a previous visit was not repeated. My goulash was a good bowl full but chunky carrots were mixed, some being al dente others appropriately cooked. Parsnips were very dark but at least well cooked while the rice was dry and slightly hard. My wife's lasagne pasta was only just cooked though still bubbling from the microwave. Whilst we're in Gannets one customer took her meal back with a complaint about tough pastry and the lady on the next table left her very dry cake after only one bite.
Counter staff were not engaging to us which was not a problem but not a situation expected in a local restaurant.
Overall our meals were edible and nothing to complain about but we do not intend to return to the restaurant.

Bistro, a la carte, private dining and parties.
Visited here Friday night for a beautiful dinner. We shared the baked cheese to start which was delicious, then had the chateaubriand for main. The meat was melt in your mouth and even the sides were lovely! As it was a steak night we then got a free dessert each - the cheese board was huge. Service was super friendly and the perfect amount of attentive. Total bill was really reasonable too - all in all a fantastic evening. Would highly recommend and will definitely return.

My son took me for Father's Day along with various members of the family. Two of us had a starter, the black pudding potato cake and poached egg. Very, very tasty potato cake and a perfectly poached egg. This was followed by a roast. The beef was pink, very tender and v dry tasty. The pork was moist and tender. Some had dessert and they all had something good to say about them, especially the ice cream. Washed down with a refreshing pint of bitter, a light golden colour and hoppy. Wonderful.

I have visited this restaurant upon several occasions, it never fails. Good and interesting location in the centre of town overlooking the minster. Pleasant and helpful staff, always good food, and of good value. Its always worth the visit esp if you like the Italian/med type food.

This great restaurant almost looks like a takeaway from the outside ,hence we have never tried it ,until we were told about it from friends. Wow once inside the atmosphere was busy but also cosy ,the food and service was great and very friendly, the food was good, although we did think the wine was a little over priced. But overall a very pleasant experience, will definitely go back .

Traditional tea room
We noticed this cafe on a recent visit to Newark and were attracted by the delightful building. We just had drinks and pannini which was very nice. The service was very friendly and efficient. We somehow managed to resist the temptation of the lovely selection of cakes but shall certainly not resist the temptation when we visit again!

Delicious home cooked central and south eastern European cuisine using quality, local ingredients wherever possible. We're passionate about offering choice, excellent service and great value. Visit Danube Cafe & Restaurant the next time you're in Newark and enjoy great food and customer service! Take the time to relax in our lounge while admiring the majestic Newark castle!
Approx 20 of us attending for a surprise 60th birthday lunch, end of last month. The service was really attentive and Ramona and her team really couldn’t do enough for us!
The food was delicious and they catered to dietary requirements and accommodated the babies/toddlers really well.
I definitely recommend the ox cheek, so tender and delicious!
Thank you all for another lovely meal!

Just off the B6386 between Oxton and Southwell.
Ample car park as a garden centre too.
Lovely friendly staff. Light modern building. Unfortunately they are trying to maximise capacity at the expense of comfort and privacy. The tables are very close together. I would estimate about 30cm apart so when sliding between them to get to your seat avoid dipping your behind into your neighbours soup!! You also get people’s jackets hitting you round your head when they walk past or take them on and off.
It is not a relaxing environment.
It’s also impossible to have a nice quiet conversation.
The cream tea was nice. Nice scone (a little dry) with small pot of jam and cream. The coffee was luke warm.
I also had a sausage cob. The roll was lovely. I was however expecting proper ‘locally produced butchers sausages’ as you would expect from a place like this, however this wasn’t the case.

The Bromley is located next to the River Trent in the beautiful village of Fiskerton near Southwell, Nottinghamshire. The major refurbishment in February 2014 brought a more modern feel to this traditional country pub with a fabulous double sided log fire situated in the heart of the pub surrounded by luxurious dining tables and booths. The addition of luxurious soft Seating areas as well as the traditional lounge bar area with its open fire provides plenty of room to relax with a glass of wine, a cup of freshly ground coffee or a beer or two before or after your meal! Soft modern furnishings complement the traditional building features, creating a warm, inviting feel. Whether your visit is for business or pleasure, The Bromley at Fiskerton provides a stylish ambience for couples and small or large groups of people with an extensive a-la-carte menu including a Gluten Free range, a mouth watering dessert menu, a lunchtime specials and snack menu, a coffee, tea and cakes menu and traditional Sunday roasts. With its beautiful riverside views The Bromley is a must for people who want to enjoy the whole dining experience in a relaxed, friendly and informal atmosphere.
My partner and I had dinner here on a busy Saturday evening. We had eaten here a couple of years ago and decided to return to see how things had changed.
We were seated quickly and served by friendly & efficient staff.
My partner found that there weren't a huge number of vegetarian options available, but she settled for one of the Goat's cheese salads with a couple of veg/salad side dishes. I went for a 10oz steak. The main meals were really very good - much better than our last visit. The side salads were a big improvement; it doesn't take much to prepare a decent salad, but a lot of places in the UK just don't seem capable of doing so. The chef(s) here had put effort into the sides, as well as the mains and all were tasty and presented well, and had quality ingredients.
Desserts were great and there was a good selection of drinks, although I would have liked a few more non-alcoholic, non-caffeine diet drinks (e.g. 7Up Free, Fanta Zero etc) as Coke gets a bit dull if you're lumbered with having to drive everyone home! :-)
So in summary, we were really pleased - the management have clearly put effort into improving the service and standard of the meals.
We will definitely return and certainly sooner than in another two years' time ha ha!
