Pining for authentic Israeli cuisine then head over to the oldest Israeli restaurant in Tokyo, Shamaim. A cozy 50 seat restaurant, tucked away in Ekoda, which is just 4 stops on the Seibu-Ikebukuro line from Ikebukuro station.
They have an à la carte menu & a variety of set menus like a Falafel set, Hummus set, Kebab set, etc. But the most popular fare is the 'all-you-can-eat' menu which is priced at ¥2400. It is not a buffet spread but the dishes are served to you. First come the starters : hummus & pita, falafel & tahini & salads. Followed by chicken schnitzel, kebabs, fried potatoes & majadra (rice with lentils), after which you can order for more until you have eaten to your heart's content. You can wash it down with some reasonably priced Israeli wines. If you have space for dessert (extra charge) then try malabi (sweet milk pudding).
Reservations are recommended especially on weekends. If you are lucky you may catch the occasional belly dance show. But I guess they charge diners for that.
Definitely an oasis for my Vegetarian & Vegan friends, who know that such restaurants for them, here in Tokyo are hard to come by.

Lovely afternoon tea. Wide variety of teas, in a beautiful atmosphere. Plentiful sweet and savoury treats, though a better balance of savoury would have been preferable.

I had Christmas dinner here with my family and we were blown away. Amongst the 5 of us we have very different dietary preferences/ restrictions. The English menu is marked with vegetarian friendly items and there is a range of options from veggie, chicken, seafood and more. The atmosphere is excellent and since it’s a small restaurant we truly felt we found a gem. We ordered tuna tartare, fried soft shell crab, fried tofu, clam and tofu miso soups, yakatori, wasabi squid, and mushroom and cheese tempura. We all left full and happy. Everything was excellent and a great value.
Besides that service was top notch and staff was very friendly!

Friendly and good english speaking staff. Food was great with good quality meats from pork to beef. Very wide selection of drinks. We made reservation earlier to avoid long queue and were given a table upon arrival. Definitely will come back again.Thank you for posting comments. Thank you for coming. We are looking forward to seeing you again!

There are a number of typical south Indian dishes, e.g., sambar and dosa. There are some good special menus although these can be slightly expensive. Indian rice can be ordered instead of the stickier Japanese rice. The Madras coffee is tasty and worth watching the way it is served.
The restaurant can get very busy especially in the weekends and public holidays, resulting in long waiting times both for Seating and for the food. Each table has a map of India, which is interesting to look at while waiting for the food!
The owner is a friendly man from Kerala (at the south-western tip of India).

The pastry shop is located somewhat far from the nearest station. I think that it is a local shop, nonetheless, some customers come to buy cakes and sweets from a distance. On holidays, it is a popular shop that makes a long line. If you have sweets you want to get quickly, I recommend to you to reserve them by phone.
The confection most recommended by this store is cream puff. Although they are slightly bigger, their shape is typical. However, the taste is exquisite. The sweetness is modest, and the cream is not bad at all. I think that it is a confection that can be eat delicious not only for children but also for adults who are not good at sweet things. I understand why there are many regular customers in this shop.

November 2017 Twice
Since this place was quite close to the Ikebukuro Station I decided to give it a visit. Went after lunch hours, but had to wait in line for about 15 minutes or so. They have menus in multiple languages that also recommend items for first-timers which was quite nice. Also, you may ask for a Large serving of noodles for no extra charge, definitely a plus.
(2nd Visit) Early dinner, about 10 minutes in line.
Mutekiya Ramen: Most balanced tonkotsu broth I've had, personally. Not overly salty, oily, or porky the flavors melded well together to create a delectable broth.
Noodles: Perfectly al dente, excellent.
Char siu: Three thick cuts of char siu. I like the big cuts, but the flavor wasn't impressive. Too sweet. Although the Yuzu Pepper was a nice touch.
(2nd Visit)
Hontoro Tokumarumen: A richer version of Mutekiya Ramen. Tasted good, but I've had better rich tonkatsu ramen.
Overall: I loved the ramen here. The print on the nori to welcome customers was cute.
(2nd Visit) Prefer Mutekiya Ramen over Hontoro Tokumarumen. I'd suggest getting the former unless you prefer a richer broth.
Would I go back? The next time I'm back in Ikebukuro. Definitely want to try their other ramens.
Do I recommend this place? Simple, yes.

The pork meat used here is the belly meat instead of the usual collar. The noodles are the think type, and the soup is quick think and slightly salty. If this is your taste, then this ramen is excellent! Tried both the tsukemen and ramen versions and both were great!
